Switching from paliperidone palmitate 3-monthly long-acting injection to oral aripiprazole in a pregnant woman with schizophrenia: a case report and short review
Riv Psichiatr. 2024 Mar-Apr;59(2):75-79. doi: 10.1708/4259.42361.ABSTRACTTreatment with long-acting injection (LAI) antipsychotics, such as paliperidone palmitate, has improved the quality of life in terms of symptoms and prevention of relapses in patients with schizophrenia. Although there are plenty of evidences about the efficacy and safety of paliperidone palmitate 3-monthly injection (PP3M) in adults with schizophrenia, literature appears lacking about the use of LAIs during pregnancy. We hereby describe the clinical case of a pregnant woman affected by schizophrenia (DSM-5-TR), taking pharmacological treatment of PP3...

Transfer learning and self-distillation for automated detection of schizophrenia using single-channel EEG and scalogram images
In this study, our main goal is to develop an optimized system that can achieve automatic diagnosis of SZ with minimal input information. To optimize the system, we adopted a strategy of using single-channel EEG signals and integrated knowledge distillation and transfer learning techniques into the model. This approach was designed to improve the performance and efficiency of our proposed method for SZ diagnosis. Additionally, to leverage the pre-trained models effectively, we converted the EEG signals into images using Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). This transformation allowed us to harness the capabilities of pre-tr...

The impact of excessive maternal weight on the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in offspring-a narrative review of clinical studies
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00598-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global prevalence of overweight and obesity is a significant public health concern that also largely affects women of childbearing age. Human epidemiological studies indicate that prenatal exposure to excessive maternal weight or excessive gestational weight gain is linked to various neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, internalizing and externalizing problems, schizophrenia, and cognitive/intellectual impairment. Considering that inadequate matern...

Effect of long-acting antipsychotic treatment on psychiatric hospitalization rate in early psychosis patients: a naturalistic study
CONCLUSION: In our study, early psychosis patients receiving LAIs experienced a greater decrease in hospitalizations after introducing the LAI treatment than those treated solely with oral medication. These findings support using LAIs as a viable strategy for preventing rehospitalization and improving the overall course of treatment for individuals with early psychosis.PMID:38644940 | PMC:PMC11032064 | DOI:10.1177/20451253241243273 (Source: Adv Data)

Seasonal patterns in Chinese population: Validating the seasonal pattern assessment questionnaire and exploring associations with psychiatric diagnoses and biological rhythms
In this study, we enrolled 198 psychiatric patients with anxiety and depressive disorders (A&D), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SZ), as well as healthy college students. Online questionnaires, including the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ) for seasonality, the Morningness and Eveningness Questionnaire-5 (MEQ-5) for chronotypes, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), were administered. The validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the SPAQ were thoroughly analyzed, revealing a Cronbach's alpha of 0.896 with a two-factor structure. Results indicated that higher seasonality was ...
