Actuality and originality in the scientific thought of Enrico Morselli (1852-1929).
Authors: Ciliberti R, Iorio S, Tosi A, Larentis O, Licata M Abstract Enrico Morselli, a student of Carlo Livi, offered an original contribution to psychiatry of his time through a plurality of interests and in-depth medical, biological, neurological, anthropological and sociological knowledge. From his writings, the relevance of his theoretical reflection under different aspects emerged: epistemological, methodological and psychopathological and of humanization of the treatment of the mentally ill. Paliperidone extended-release in the short- and long-term treatment of schizophrenia.
Authors: Valsecchi P, Garozzo A, Nibbio G, Barlati S, Deste G, Turrina C, Sacchetti E, Vita A Abstract Paliperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic drug belonging to the class of benzisoxasole derivatives. Paliperidone is the major active metabolite of risperidone (9-OH-risperidone) and, as such, is comparable to the latter in terms of pharmacodynamic properties. However, due to its peculiar characteristics, paliperidone may be particularly useful in the treatment of schizophrenic patients. In this critical review of the literature the efficacy and tolerability in the short- and in the long-term have been eval...

Considering the transition to motherhood a critical period for any woman, requiring the activation of deep personality resources, the aim of this study was to detect, in a sample of 16 filicide women hospitalized in Italian Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals, the recurrent characteristics with a specific focus on personality traits. The central role of psychopathology and its association with disease severity in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
Authors: Piacentino D, Cesarini M, Badiali D, Pallotta N, Biondi M, Corazziari ES Abstract BACKGROUND: Biopsychosocial models for both organic and functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders can be found in the literature. To clarify the role of psychopathological factors and their relationship with GI symptom severity, several studies have examined them in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - occasionally distinguishing between ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) - and in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leading to unclear results. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the psychopathological features of IBD and ...

Authors: Serrone D, Parnanzone S, Pizziconi G, Talevi D, Curtarello EMA, Pacitti F, Rossi A, Rossi R Abstract Patients with psychosis, especially those with specific positive symptoms such as auditory verbal hallucinations, show a source monitoring deficit, the cognitive process involved in the recognition of the information source. This defect can lead to the erroneous conclusion that self-generated thoughts are not "proper" but derive from an external source. The role of the Retrospective Identification of Motivations and Inclinations in explaining obsessive beliefs.
Authors: Mannino G Abstract While psychopathological phenomena of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been well described some time ago, instead there is still need for a deeper understanding of mechanisms underlying psychopathological phenomena themselves. About this, a recently proposed concept - the 'Retrospective Identification of Motivations and Inclinations' (RIMI) - seems to have a promising explanatory capacity about different aspects of obsessive-compulsive disorder. For example, as shown elsewhere, it appears to shed new light on the so-called 'fear of self' in OCD. In this paper, the role of RIMI in...

This study aims to examine possible psychiatric predictors of BID. In particular, we explored the burden of new associated factors such as early trauma and attachment style (AS), which have not been assessed in previous literature. METHODS: In this study, 536 patients with extreme obesity (mean Body Mass Index, BMI=43 kg/m2, SD=6.62) undergoing presurgical psychiatric evaluations as part of a mandatory workup before surgery were chosen as participants. CONCLUSIONS: Despite its relatively short duration, this treatment package appeared to be effective in improving behaviors at mealtime in both children with ASD and ID; if confirmed by future studies, the program could represent an interesting model for treating feeding problems in children with special needs, because it is implemented in a day service (with lower costs compared to residential or hospital services), takes advantage from family co-therapy, and can be integrated in a global psychoeducational program. Authors: Rainone A, Mancini F Abstract In this article we focus on hypomania and mania in bipolar disorder and, in all probability, only in some types of bipolar disorder. We deal with positive emotions, whose psychopathogenic role still receives too little attention in experimental and clinical psychology. We propose a hypothesis with regard to the psychological mechanisms involved in hypomanic and manic decompensation that posits in primis the secondary problem or secondary evaluation, which in this case takes on peculiar content characteristics, and subordinately affect as information. We shall see how a certain...

Riv Psichiatr. We explore the psychodynamic meaning of the hair pulling, both in light of the problems related to introjective and projective processes which, in the kleinian view, gives structure to the internal world and, according to Margaret Mahler, individuation-separation theory. What is the difference between depression and burnout? An ongoing debate.
Authors: Schonfeld IS, Bianchi R, Palazzi S Abstract Burnout has been viewed as a syndrome developing in response to chronically adverse working conditions. Burnout is thought to comprise emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Historically, however, burnout has been difficult to separate from depression. Indeed, the symptoms of burnout coincide with symptoms of depression. Evidence for the discriminant validity of burnout with regard to depression has been weak, both at an empirical and a theoretical level. Emotional exhaustion, the core of burnout, itself reflects a combinati...
