NIH study provides answer to long-held debate on blood sugar control after stroke

Value of Triglyceride-glucose Index for the Estimation of Ischemic Stroke Risk: Insights from a general Population
Recent studies have recognized triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) as a practical surrogate of insulin resistance. Previous studies have demonstrated that insulin resistance contributes to ischemic stroke via multiple mechanisms. Our study aimed to investigate the association between TyG and prevalent ischemic stroke, exploring the value of TyG to optimize the risk stratification of ischemic stroke.

There is a higher incidence of stroke in both the type 2 diabetic and the non-diabetic insulin resistant patient which is accompanied by higher morbidity and mortality. Stroke primary prevention can be achieved by controlling atrial fibrillation and hypertension, and the utilization of statins and anticoagulant therapies. Utilizing pioglitazone and GLP-1 receptor agonists reduce the risk of stroke while the utilization of metformin, α-glucosidase inhibitors, DPP-4 and SGLT-2 inhibitors have no effect.

Acupuncture against the metabolic risk factors for stroke: A systematic review of systematic reviews
Conclusion: This review summarizes the available evidence and underpins findings of the acupuncture exhibited the therapeutic role in eliminating metabolic risk factors for stroke, including systolic blood pressure, weight loss, glycemic index and cholesterol. Acupuncture could have positive effects on a specific symptom, and the effects depend not only on intervention type but also on how and when the intervention is provided. And more prioritizing high-quality research in this field in the future is conducive to guiding clinical practice.
