Stroke in the patient with diabetes (part 1) – Epidemiology, etiology, therapy and prognosis

There is a higher incidence of stroke in both the type 2 diabetic and the non-diabetic insulin resistant patient which is accompanied by higher morbidity and mortality. The increase in the frequency of stroke is due to an increase in cerebral infarction, mainly lacunar infarcts, with the incidence of cerebral hemorrhage being less frequent. The major risk factors for stroke in the type 2 diabetic patient are age, hypertension, the number of features of the Metabolic Syndrome, the presence of diabetic nephropathy in both the type 1 and type 2 patient, the presence of peripheral and coronary artery disease and especially the presence of atrial fibrillation.

This study used 30 adult male mice strain BALB/c. Diabetes was induced using high-fat diet/streptozotocin method until random blood glucose level reached> 200 mg/dL. Diabetic mice were then exposed to electrical field (static and dynamic), magnetic field (static and induce), and infrared ray (with or without infrared ray) combination therapy 15 min daily for 28 days. Fasting blood glucose level, plasma insulin level, HOMA-IR index, and membrane GLUT-4 density after treatment were analyzed statistically atα = 0.05. Result showed that exposure combination of electrical field, magnetic field, and infrared were found ...

The objective of this study was investigating the additional effect of DL with nonsurgical periodontal treatment on the red complex bacteria in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with chronic periodontitis (CP). Sixty type 2 DM patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) were randomly assigned in two parallel groups to receive scaling root planning (SRP,n = 30) or SRP followed by DL periodontal pocket irradiation (SRP + DL,n = 30). Recording of clinical parameters and subgingival plaque sampling were performed at baseline, and post therapy (1 and 3 months after treatment). Amounts ofPorphy...

Authors: John J, Henry M, Ringoir A, Pinto G, Kesner K, Lazarus J, Sinha S Abstract BACKGROUND: The standard of care for surgically resectable disease renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a nephrectomy. Post-nephrectomy, these patients are at risk for the development of new onset chronic kidney disease or the progression of pre-existing chronic kidney disease. We aimed to report the changes in renal function in patients who had a nephrectomy for RCC. METHODS: This retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study identified 137 patients who had a nephrectomy for RCC from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2017. The pre-nep...

Authors: Stepien K, Furczynska P, Zalewska M, Nowak K, Wlodarczyk A, Owsianka I, Skorek P, Zalewski J, Nessler J Abstract BACKGROUND: Recently heart failure (HF) has been found to be a new dementia risk factor, nevertheless their relations in patients following HF decompensation remain unknown. We sought to investigate whether a screening diagnosis for dementia (SDD) in this high-risk population may predict unfavorable long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: 142 patients following HF decompensation requiring hospitalization were enrolled. Within a median time of 55 months all patients were screened for dementia w...

Authors: Salcedo Mafla E, Gutiérrez Benítez L, Asaad M Abstract The case is presented on an 80-year-old woman with IgA multiple myeloma (MM), who developed retinal changes similar to mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, with micro-aneurysms and intraretinal fluid. The patient was treated with systemic chemotherapy for MM, and with bevacizumab intravitreal injections, with control of her ocular disorder for 22 months. Anti-angiogenic therapy can be useful in the control of retinopathy secondary to MM, as long as the systemic disease has been controlled. PMID: 32636041 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
