Fluorophore position of headgroup-labeled Gb < sub > 3 < /sub > glycosphingolipids in lipid bilayers
Biophys J. 2023 Sep 21:S0006-3495(23)00587-8. doi: 10.1016/j.bpj.2023.09.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFluorescent lipid probes are an invaluable tool for investigating lipid membranes. In particular, localizing particular receptor lipids such as glycosphingolipids within phase-separated membranes is of pivotal interest to understanding the influence of protein-receptor lipid binding on membrane organization. However, fluorescent labeling can readily alter the phase behavior of a lipid membrane because of the interaction of the fluorescent moiety with the membrane interface. Here, we investigated Gb3 glycosphingolipid...

A user's guide to degradation testing of polyethylene glycol-based hydrogels: From in vitro to in vivo studies
J Biomed Mater Res A. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1002/jbm.a.37609. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrogels have gained significant attention in the field of biomedical applications due to their versatility and antifouling properties. Acrylate-derivatized PEG hydrogels (PEGDA) are some of the most widely studied hydrogels; however, there has been debate around the degradation mechanism and predicting resorption rates. Several factors influence the degradation rate of PEG hydrogels, including backbone and endgroup chemistry, macromer molecular weight, and polymer concentration. In addition to hydr...

Extrinsic lipoid pneumonia due to chronic polyethylene glycol consumption: A case report
Respir Investig. 2023 Sep 14;61(6):768-772. doi: 10.1016/j.resinv.2023.08.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtrinsic lipoid pneumonia (ELP) results from the aspiration of lipid-containing substances. Tissue or cell histopathology after Oil-Red-O staining can confirm the diagnosis, which requires proper tissue handling and preparation during bronchoscopy. Here, we report a case of ELP in a quadriplegic patient with a long history of dysphagia and polyethylene glycol consumption. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest revealed multiple, progressively enlarging, fat-attenuated, nodular pulmonary lesions. Bronchoscopy with br...

Multiplex genotyping of SNPs in genomic DNA via hydrogel-based assay mediated with MutS and polyethylene glycol
In this study, a hydrogel-based multiplex SNP genotyping platform specifically designed for genomic DNA is presented. This platform integrates the ligation detection reaction (LDR) and rolling circle amplification (RCA) techniques within a hydrogel-based multiplex sensing system, enabling adaptable and sensitive SNP genotyping for genomic DNA. To enhance the specificity of the assay, MutS protein and polyethylene glycol are introduced into the protocol, reducing the non-specific ligation and RCA reactions synergistically. With significant specificity improvement of over 10-fold, three types of SNPs within an artificially c...

Varying the Stiffness and Diffusivity of Rod-Shaped Microgels Independently through Their Molecular Building Blocks
In this report, we systematically vary the architecture and molar mass of polyethylene glycol-acrylate (PEG-Ac) precursors, as well as their concentration and combination, to gain insight in the different parameters that affect the internal structure of rod-shaped microgels. We characterize the mechanical properties and diffusivity, as well as the conversion of acrylate groups during photopolymerization, in both bulk hydrogels and microgels produced from the PEG-Ac precursors. Furthermore, we investigate cell-microgel interaction, and we observe improved cell spreading on microgels with more accessible RGD peptide and with...

Bulk industrial production of sustainable cellulosic printing fabric using agricultural waste to reduce the impact of climate change
This study represents a significant contribution to sustainable textile production, as tamarind agriculture waste was used as a raw material, which is an environmentally friendly alternative of sodium alginate that reduces the wastewater load. Additionally, PEG-400 was utilized as a nitrogen-free solubilizing moisture management substitution of urea for printing, while TCEA dissociated at high temperature to make alkaline pH during curing of the printed fabric to replace sodium bicarbonate. This research is a novel contribution to the printing industry, as these three constituents have not been previously used together oth...

Current advances and emerging trends in sustainable polyhydroxyalkanoate modification from organic waste streams for material applications
This study focuses on the development of sustainable, efficient, and cutting-edge methods, such as advanced bioprocess engineering, novel catalysts, and advances in materials science. Chemical techniques, such as epoxidation, oxidation, and esterification, have been employed for PHA functionalization, while enzymatic and microbial methods have indicated promise. PHB/polylactic acid blends with cellulose fibers showed improved tensile strength by 24.45-32.08 % and decreased water vapor and oxygen transmission rates while PHB/Polycaprolactone blends with a 1:1 ratio demonstrated an elongation at break four to six times highe...
