Visible Light Induced Control over Reversible Single Chain Nanoparticle Folding
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Jul 23:e202309259. doi: 10.1002/anie.202309259. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe introduce a class of single chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) that respond to visible light (λmax = 415 nm) with complete unfolding from their compact structure into linear chain analogues. The initial folding is achieved by a simple esterification reaction of the polymer backbone constituted of acrylic acid and polyethylene glycol carrying monomer units, introducing bimane moieties, which allow for the photochemical unfolding reversing the ester-bond formation. The compaction and the light driven unfolding proceed clea...

Efficacy and safety of 1 L polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid for bowel preparation in elderly: comparison with oral sulfate solution
CONCLUSIONS: The successful bowel preparation rate was > 90% in both groups without severe adverse effects and significant changes in renal function. As a new low-dose preparation regimen for colonoscopy in older adults, 1 L PEG/Asc, is as effective and safe as OSS.PMID:37482653 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.030

Artefactually low creatinine by Beckman Coulter enzymatic method due to immunoglobulin M paraprotein interference
Ann Clin Biochem. 2023 Jul 23:45632231190507. doi: 10.1177/00045632231190507. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn 81-year-old man was admitted to hospital with symptomatic coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection. He had a background of progressive chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy associated with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia. His plasma creatinine on four separate samples was inconceivably low (all ≤13 μmol/L), as measured by a Beckman Coulter enzymatic assay) after being 72 μmol/L 3 months earlier. On further investigation, his serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) was 15.4 g/L and his plasma creatinine measu...

A β42 fibril and non-fibril oligomers characterization using a nanopipette
Biophys Chem. 2023 Jul 17;300:107076. doi: 10.1016/j.bpc.2023.107076. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Aβ42 aggregates with different structures and morphology was investigated through a single molecule label-free technique. To this end, the quartz nanopipettes were functionalized with polyethylene glycol. The set of Aβ42- epigallocatechin-3-gallate fibrils with length (from 85 nm to 250 nm) obtained by sonication was detected. The comparison of experimental and computed value of the amplitude of relative current blockade using a geometrical model show that for fibrils longer than 80 nm, the discriminating parameter is ...

Development of Lipid Polymer Hybrid Drug Delivery Systems Prepared by Hot-Melt Extrusion
This study sought to develop polymer-lipid hybrid solid dispersions containing the poorly soluble drug lopinavir (LPV) by hot-melt extrusion (HME). Hence, the lipid and polymeric adjuvants were selected based on miscibility and compatibility studies. Film casting was used to assess the miscibility, whereas thermal, spectroscopic, and chromatographic analyses were employed to evaluate drug-excipient compatibility. Extrudates were obtained and characterized by physicochemical tests, including in vitro LPV dissolution. Preformulation studies led to select the most appropriate materials, i.e., the polymers PVPVA and Soluplus®...

Valorisation of crude glycerol in the production of liquefied lignin bio-polyols for polyurethane formulations
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jul 15:125855. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125855. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBio-polyols, produced by liquefying lignin with polyhydric alcohols, offer a promising alternative to conventional polyols for polyurethane production. To enhance the sustainability on the production of these bio-polyols, this study proposes the use of crude glycerol and microwave-assisted liquefaction as substitutes for conventional methods and commercial glycerol. This approach reduces the energy requirements of the reaction while also adding value to this by-product. The synthesis of bio-polyols with suitable prop...

Green synthesis of sulfonated cellulose/polyether block amide/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (SC/PEBAX/PEGDA) composite membrane by gamma radiation and sulfonation techniques for battery application
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jul 14:125844. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125844. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSulfonated cellulose (SC) was successfully prepared through a two-step process of gamma radiation and subsequently sulfonation with potassium metabisulfite of microcrystalline cellulose extracted from sugarcane bagasse. The effect of gamma radiation dose on cellulose showed an increment of oxidation degree, which was evidenced by the intensity ratio of I1718 (carbonyl)/ I2892 (aliphatic) from FTIR analysis. The obtained SC was introduced into polyether block amide/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEBAX/PEGDA) polymer ...
