Artificial intelligence of arterial Doppler waveforms to predict major adverse outcomes among patients with diabetes mellitus.
Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at increased risk for peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its complications. Arterial calcification and non-compressibility may limit test interpretation in this population. Developing tools capable of identifying PAD and predicting major adverse cardiac (MACE) and limb (MALE) outcomes among diabetic patients would be clinically useful. Deep neural network analysis of resting Doppler arterial waveforms was used to detect PAD among diabetic patients and to identify those at greatest risk for major adverse outcome events. In Association with Other Risk Factors, Smoking Is the Main Predictor for Lower Transcutaneous Oxygen Pressure in Type 2 Diabetes
This study investigated the risk factors for transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) in T2DM, a noninvasive method to quantify skin oxygenation and the underlying microvascular circulation. The study included 119 T2DM patients (91 male/28 female). TcPO2 measurements were conducted with the Tina TCM4 Series transcutaneous monitor (Radiometer, Copenhagen, Sweden) and skin electrodes. Patients with TcPO2 < 40 mmHg were younger (p = 0.001), had significantly higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p = 0.023), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (p = 0.013), fasting plasma glucose (fPG) (p = 0.038), total cholesterol (p = 0.006), LDL c...

Exploring Understanding of Peripheral Artery Disease among Patients at High-Risk in Saudi Arabia: Results from an Interview-Based Study
CONCLUSION: This study underscores the inadequate knowledge of PAD among high-risk individuals. Targeted educational initiatives are essential to bridge this knowledge gap, potentially reducing the burden of PAD-related complications and improving patient outcomes. Efforts should focus on raising awareness about PAD, particularly among high-risk populations.PMID:38391398 | DOI:10.3390/clinpract14010002 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

The Pink Tax: Sex and Gender Disparities in Peripheral Artery Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women, accounting for nearly one of every three deaths in women in the US annually.1 Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a significant marker of systemic arteriosclerosis associated with increased all-cause, cardiovascular (CV), and cerebrovascular mortality, but it remains largely underrecognized and undertreated among wom... Incidence and risk factors of venous and arterial thromboembolic events among patients with ovarian cancer- data from a large Canadian database
CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors predictive of thrombosis in ovarian cancer patients are not consistent between ATE and VTE, thus thrombotic events should not be combined for analysis. Differential thrombosis risk assessment is needed to improve prevention strategies and guide thromboprophylaxis for these patients.PMID:38382168 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2024.02.011 (Source: Gynecologic Oncology)

Transplantation of Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Pericyte-Like Cells Transduced with Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor Promotes Angiogenic Recovery in Mice with Severe Chronic Hindlimb Ischemia
J Cardiovasc Transl Res. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.1007/s12265-024-10496-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCritical limb ischemia (CLI) is a state of severe peripheral artery disease, with no effective treatment. Cell therapy has been investigated as a therapeutic tool for CLI, and pericytes are promising therapeutic candidates based on their angiogenic properties. We firstly generated highly proliferative and immunosuppressive pericyte-like cells from embryonic stem (ES) cells. In order to enhance the angiogenic potential, we transduced the basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) gene into the pericyte-like cells and found a sign...

Addressing Barriers to Entry and Retention of Women in Interventional Vascular Specialties With Proposed Solutions: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001210. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRepresentation of women in interventional vascular fields (interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and vascular surgery) lags behind that in other specialties. With women representing half of all medical school graduates, encouraging parity of women in these fields needs to start in medical school. Barriers to pursuing careers in vascular intervention include insufficient exposure during core clerkships, early mentorship, visibility of women in the field, length of training, lifestyle considerations, work culture and env...
