Role of (18)F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography in imaging atherosclerosis
J Nucl Cardiol. 2024 Mar 11:101845. doi: 10.1016/j.nuclcard.2024.101845. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis involving vascular beds across the human body remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Coronary and peripheral artery disease which are almost universally a result of atherosclerotic plaque can manifest clinically as myocardial infarctions, ischemic stroke or acute lower limb ischemia. Beyond imaging myocardial perfusion and blood flow nuclear imaging has the potential to depict the activity of the processes which are directly implicated in the atherosclerotic plaque progression and rupture. Out of se...

Association between Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Another Brick in the Wall
Int J Mol Sci. 2024 Feb 21;25(5):2502. doi: 10.3390/ijms25052502.ABSTRACTIn recent years, immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly changed the field of oncology, emerging as first-line treatment, either alone or in combination with other regimens, for numerous malignancies, improving overall survival and progression-free survival in these patients. However, immune checkpoint inhibitors might also cause severe or fatal immune-related adverse events, including adverse cardiovascular events. Initially, myocarditis was recognized as the main immune checkpoint inhibitor-related cardiac event, but our knowledge of other p...

The Potential of Natural Products in the Management of Cardiovascular Disease
Curr Pharm Des. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.2174/0113816128295053240207090928. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular Disease (CVD) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, comprising a variety of disorders such as hypertension, heart attacks, Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), dyslipidemias, strokes, coronary heart disease, and cardiomyopathies. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that 22.2 million people will die from CVD in 2030. Conventional treatments for CVDs are often quite expensive and also have several side effects. This potentiates the use of medicinal plants, which are still a viable alternat...

Assessment of atherosclerotic plaque morphology using contrast-enhanced ultrasound and its impact on primary cardiovascular events following simultaneous carotid endarterectomy and coronary artery bypass grafting
CONCLUSION: Within 30 days of surgery, a significant correlation exists between the occurrence of ischaemic stroke following carotid endarterectomy subsequent to CABG and the presence of a higher grade plaque vascularisation as identified by contrast-enhanced ultrasound.PMID:38479436 | DOI:10.1177/17085381241239499 (Source: Vascular)

Perioperative and Long-Term Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Synchronous Carotid Endarterectomy and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Single-Center Experience
ConclusionPatients undergoing synchronous CEA and CABG face an elevated risk of perioperative cardiovascular events, particularly an increased stroke risk in patients with symptomatic and bilateral ICA stenosis.Graphical Abstract available for this article.Graphical Abstract (Source: Advances in Therapy)

Inclusivity in randomised clinical trials: myth or reality?
In this issue of Heart, Castelijns et al aimed to apply the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the Cardiovascular Outcomes for People Using Anticoagulation Strategies, Clopidogrel for High Atherothrombotic Risk and Ischemic Stabilization, Management and Avoidance trials, Prevention of Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Prior Heart Attack Using Ticagrelor Compared to Placebo on a Background of Aspirin-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction and Dual Antiplatelet Therapy to patients included in the Utrecht Cardiovascular Cohort-Second Manifestations of Arterial Disease. The study aims to evaluate the applicability in th...

Generalisability of trials on antithrombotic treatment intensification in patients with cardiovascular disease
Conclusion A large proportion of contemporary CVD patients would be eligible for intensified antithrombotic treatment trials, with mostly similar adjusted event risks to ineligible patients. Trial-based guideline recommendations are largely applicable to real-world patients. (Source: Heart)

Non-coronary atherosclerosis: a marker of poor prognosis in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients undergoing CABG, the presence of NCA doubled the risk of developing cardiovascular events, and it was associated with higher mortality.PMID:38464841 | PMC:PMC10921089 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2024.1305162 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Exercise Therapy for Chronic Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease: A  Clinical Consensus Document of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Diseases in Collaboration With the European Society of Vascular Medicine and the European Society for Vascular Surgery
Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg. 2024 Feb 16:S1078-5884(24)00011-X. doi: 10.1016/j.ejvs.2024.01.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAll guidelines worldwide strongly recommend exercise as a pillar in the management of patients affected by lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). Exercise therapy in this setting presents different modalities, and a structured programme provides optimal results. This clinical consensus paper is intended to promote and assist the set up of comprehensive exercise programmes and best advice for patients with symptomatic chronic PAD. Different exercise training protocols specific for patients wi...
