GFRA4 improves the neurogenic potential of enteric neural crest stem cells via hedgehog pathway
CONCLUSION: GFRA4 promotes proliferation and differentiation but inhibits apoptosis of ENCSCs via the hedgehog pathway in HSCR.IMPACT: This study confirms that GFRA4 improves the proliferation and differentiation of ENCSCs via modulation of the hedgehog pathway. This study for the first time revealed the role and the mechanism of the action of GFRA4 in HSCR, which indicates that GFRA4 may play a role in the pathological development of HSCR. Our findings may lay the foundation for further investigation of the mechanisms underlying HSCR development and into targets of HSCR treatment.PMID:38658664 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-024-031...

Is choline deficiency an unrecognized factor in necrotizing enterocolitis of preterm infants?
In conclusion, this review supports the need for randomized clinical trials to test the hypothesis that additional choline or PC provided parenterally or enterally can reduce the incidence of NEC in preterm infants. IMPACT STATEMENT: Low choline status in preterm infants who are managed by conventional nutrition is plausibly linked to the risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis.PMID:38658665 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-024-03212-5 (Source: Pediatric Research)

Young hearts, early risks: novel cardiovascular biomarkers in former very preterm infants at kindergarten age
CONCLUSION: In preterm-born children, iFGF-23 and secretoneurin both offer prospects as valuable cardiovascular biomarkers, potentially allowing for risk stratification and timely implementation of preventive measures.IMPACT: Former very preterm infants have increased plasma concentrations of the novel cardiovascular biomarkers intact fibroblast growth factor-23 (iFGF-23) and secretoneurin at kindergarten age. Increases in iFGF-23 concentrations are associated with decreased distensibility of the descending aorta even at this early age. Monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors is essential in individuals with a history of...

Hirschsprung's disease: m6A methylase VIRMA suppresses cell migration and proliferation by regulating GSK3 β
CONCLUSION: VIRMA can inhibit cell migration and proliferation by upregulating the expression of GSK3β, contributing to the onset of HSCR.IMPACT: The expressions of VIRMA were significantly reduced in HSCR, while GSK3β expression was increased in HSCR, and can be used as a molecular marker. VIRMA overexpression promoted the proliferation and migration of SH-SY5Y and HEK-293T cells. VIRMA can inhibit the degradation of GSK3β mRNA and increase the expression of GSK3β.PMID:38658662 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-024-03136-0 (Source: Pediatric Research)

Comparing Accuracy of Night Radiology Interpretations for Pediatric Trauma: Radiology Residents Versus Attending Teleradiologists
Discussion: When interpreting PTP CT imaging, RRs had similar discrepancy rates but faster TTI than ATs. Radiology residents had a higher discrepancy rate for PTP CTs than RR interpretation of adult patients, indicating both RRs and ATs need more focused training in the interpretation of PTP studies.PMID:38655777 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248794 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Comparison of baseline cataract rates in AB and TL wildtype zebrafish strains
In this study, we compared the baseline cataract rate between two commonly used wildtype laboratory strains, AB and TL, and also an outbred transgenic line with mCherry reporter. We assessed a total of 805 lens images of fish at 4 days post-fertilisation for cataracts and scored each cataract observed as mild, moderate or severe. We found that the AB strain had a cataract rate of 16.2%, TL had 8.9%, and mCherry had 0.7% and these rates were significantly different. We found that TL strain had a lower rate of mild cataracts than AB fish, however, the rate of moderate and severe phenotypes in the AB and the TL strain was sim...

Pediatric anesthesia in Australia and New Zealand and health inequity among First Nations and M āori children
Paediatr Anaesth. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1111/pan.14898. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAustralia and New Zealand are two countries in the Southern Pacific region. They share many pediatric anesthesia similarities in terms of medical organizational systems, education, training, and research, however there are important differences between the two nations in relation to geography, the First Nations populations and the history of colonization. While the standards for pediatric anesthesia and the specialty training requirements are set by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anesthetists and the Society for Pediatric Anesth...
