Effects of the use of a cocoon on the autonomic, motor, and regulatory systems in preterm newborns: Randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSION: The simulation of a cocoon, utilizing an orthopedic tubular mesh, when applied to preterm newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit can contribute to maintaining low levels of stress, without altering variables of the autonomous, motor, and regulatory systems.PMID:38538471 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2024.01.005 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Impact of quarantine on the experience and management of children with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders with or without hyperactivity: A retrospective observational study
CONCLUSION: The period of confinement was experienced relatively well by the children, and the rehabilitative management seemed to have been minimally impacted during this period. The therapeutic education of children, their parents, and also teachers is a major axis of improvement for better care and support of children with these disorders.PMID:38538472 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.10.011 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Airway obstruction in two children with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome and review of the literature
Arch Pediatr. 2024 Mar 26:S0929-693X(24)00027-7. doi: 10.1016/j.arcped.2023.12.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCongenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is an autosomal dominant disease that is caused by heterozygous mutations in the paired-like homeobox 2B gene (PHOX2B). Madani et al. described an abnormally high degree of not only central apnea but also obstructive and mixed apnea in Phox2b27Ala/+newborn mice. Newborns with CCHS must undergo polysomnography for obstructive respiratory events in order to guide the optimal ventilation strategy if oxygen desaturation, bradycardia, and malaise persist under nonin...

Evaluation of vitamin D levels in children and adolescents after the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: 1-year results of a secondary-level state hospital
CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency remains a serious public health problem. Since the most important production source is exposure to the sun, it must be kept in mind that vitamin D should be supported during lockdown pandemic processes.PMID:38538466 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.11.001 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Treatment of pediatric heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia 7 years after the EAS recommendations: Real-world results from a large French cohort
CONCLUSION: Pediatric patients with FH followed up in specialist lipid clinics in France receive late treatment, undertreatment, or suboptimal treatment and half of them do not reach the therapeutic LDL-C goal. Finding a more efficient framework for linking scientific evidence to clinical practice is needed.PMID:38538465 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2024.01.004 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Scleral-fixated vs Iris-fixated intraocular lens in pediatric ectopia lentis: A systematic review
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2024 Mar 27:11206721241242158. doi: 10.1177/11206721241242158. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNumerous intraocular lens (IOLs) options are available for treating pediatric ectopia lentis, and this paper reviews recent literature on pediatric ectopia lentis treatment with iris-fixated and scleral-fixated IOLs. A comprehensive search was undertaken on PubMed, Embase, ProQuest, Cochrane, Wiley, SCOPUS, and EBSCO. Studies published in the last ten years that met the inclusion criteria were included in this review. Seventeen studies exhibiting low to moderate risk of bias were included in this review, with eigh...

The late effects of haematopoietic stem cell transplants in paediatric patients: a 25 year review
CONCLUSIONS: We confirm gonadal dysfunction, multiple endocrine and metabolic abnormalities, thyroid cancer and SMNs, as common sequelae of HSCT, and identify gaps in management - particularly the need for informed fertility counselling and pretreatment fertility preservation, evaluation and management of bone health, and underline need for early lifestyle modification, long-term surveillance, and prospective planned studies aimed at reducing complication risk.PMID:38534046 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae196 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Cell Therapy Transplant Canada (CTTC) Consensus-Based Guideline 2024 for Management and Treatment of Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Future Directions for Development
Curr Oncol. 2024 Mar 8;31(3):1426-1444. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31030108.ABSTRACTThis is a consensus-based Canadian guideline whose primary purpose is to standardize and facilitate the management of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) across the country. Creating uniform healthcare guidance in Canada is a challenge for a number of reasons including the differences in healthcare authority structure, funding and access to healthcare resources between provinces and territories, as well as the geographic size. These differences can lead to variable and unequal access to effective therapies for GvHD. This document will prov...

Comparative efficacy of combined antihistamine and montelukast therapy in adult patients with atopic dermatitis
CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of data presenting the therapy outcomes in two groups showed that administration of the combined therapy was significantly more effective compared to the antihistamine monotherapy. The results revealed considerable efficacy of the combined therapy reinforced by the use of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, montelukast.PMID:38533375 | PMC:PMC10962370 | DOI:10.5114/ada.2023.135759 (Source: Advances in Dermatology and Allergology)

Back to Basics
In this volume of The Journal Singh et al perform a secondary analysis of a study of low-risk febrile infants evaluated in the emergency department (ED). The authors focused on contaminated cultures using specific criteria to define contamination in blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens. Surprisingly, nearly 10% had contaminated cultures, 4.9% of blood cultures, 5.0% of urine cultures, and 1.8% of CSF cultures. These findings are concerning and speak to some foundational practices that still hold true. (Source: The Journal of Pediatrics)
