Hepatolithiasis: Epidemiology, presentation, classification and management of a complex disease
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1836-1850. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1836.ABSTRACTThe term hepatolithiasis describes the presence of biliary stones within the intrahepatic bile ducts, above the hilar confluence of the hepatic ducts. The disease is more prevalent in Asia, mainly owing to socioeconomic and dietary factors, as well as the prevalence of biliary parasites. In the last century, owing to migration, its global incidence has increased. The main pathophysiological mechanisms involve cholangitis, bile infection and biliary strictures, creating a self-sustaining cycle that perpetuates the disease, frequently c...

Assessment of the in vitro acaricidal activity of Bravecto ® (fluralaner) and a proposed orange oil-based formulation vehicle for the treatment of Sarcoptes scabiei
Sarcoptic mange is a serious animal welfare concern in bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). Fluralaner (Bravecto ®) is a novel acaricide that has recently been utilised for treating mange in wombats. The topical... (Source: Parasites and Vectors)

A prevalence study on gastrointestinal parasitic infections of pig (Sus scrofa) in and around Meerut, Western Uttar Pradesh, India
AbstractThe present study was conducted to record the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of pigs by faecal sample examination. Faecal samples were collected in three different seasons viz; monsoon, post monsoon and pre monsoon, from in and around Meerut district of Western Uttar Pradesh. A total of 642 faecal samples were collected for a period of one year (2020 –21). The overall prevalence rate recorded for gastrointestinal parasites in pigs was 64.4%.The findings of the present work showed that seasons have a significant role on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites infection in pigs, with highest prevalen...

Sampling is decisive to determination of < i > Leishmania (Viannia) < /i > species
ConclusionsThe type of clinical sample can directly influence the detection and identification ofLeishmania (Viannia) species. Here, we demonstrated that lancet scraping samples consistently allowed the identification of more leishmaniasis cases compared to filter paper imprints or biopsies. This procedure is inexpensive, painless, and easy to implement at the point of care and avoids the need for anesthesia, surgery, and hospitalization and therefore could be used in resource limited settings for both military and civilian populations. Spatio-temporal distribution of hospitalizations for chronic Chagas disease and risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality and surgical intervention in Chile
by Nicolhole Atero, Marisa Torres, Ang élica Domínguez, Benjamín Diethelm-Varela, Francisca Córdova-Bührle, Fernando O. Mardones Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected parasitic zoonotic disease that affects over 6 million people worldwide. We conducted a retrospective study to analyze the spatiotemporal trends and risk factors for hospitalization rates of CD with cardiac and digestive diagnoses in Chile. We used the Mann-Kendall analysis for temporal trends, Global Moran ’s Index, and Local Indicators of Spatial Association to identify spatial autocorrelation, and regression models to determine the risk factors associ...

Ancestral aneuploidy and stable chromosomal duplication resulting in differential genome structure and gene expression control in trypanosomatid parasites [RESEARCH]
Aneuploidy is widely observed in both unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes, usually associated with adaptation to stress conditions. Chromosomal duplication stability is a tradeoff between the fitness cost of having unbalanced gene copies and the potential fitness gained from increased dosage of specific advantageous genes. Trypanosomatids, a family of protozoans that include species that cause neglected tropical diseases, are a relevant group to study aneuploidies. Their life cycle has several stressors that could select for different patterns of chromosomal duplications and/or losses, and their nearly universal use o...

Expression of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) and Astacin Genes of < em > Strongyloides stercoralis < /em > as well as HSP70 and HSP17.1 Genes of < em > S. ratti < /em > in Adult and Larval Stages of < em > S. stercoralis < /em >
CONCLUSION: Higher expression levels of Sst-ast, Sst-hsp-70, and Sra-hsp-70 genes in the larval stages of S. stercoralis suggest the potential role of these enzymes in parasite cutaneous invasion and pathogenesis. However, higher expression of Srahsp-17.1 in adult forms is probably involved in resistance and survival mechanisms. The similarity in gene expression between S. stercoralis and S. ratti can provide helpful hints to better understand strongyloidiasis from various perspectives, including pathogenesis, proper diagnosis, and targeted treatment.PMID:38654956 | PMC:PMC11033530 | DOI:10.18502/ijpa.v19i1.15187 (Source: ...

A Troublesome Complication of Hydatid Cysts; Intra-Abdominal Rupture: A 10-Year Study from a High-Volume Center
CONCLUSION: Hydatid cyst rupture should be considered in cases of acute abdomen, particularly in regions where the disease is endemic, as in our region. The ruptured hydatid cyst was primarily observed in the liver (94.11% of cases).PMID:38654950 | PMC:PMC11033535 | DOI:10.18502/ijpa.v19i1.15199 (Source: Iranian Journal of Parasitology)

Malaria in a vulnerable population living in quilombo remnant communities in the Brazilian Amazon: a cross-sectional study from 2005-2020
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2024 Apr 19;66:e25. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202466025. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTQuilombo remnant communities are areas officially recognized by the Brazilian government as historical communities founded by formerly enslaved individuals. These communities are mostly located in the endemic areas of malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. We retrospectively described the prevalence of malaria among individuals living in 32 recognized quilombo remnant communities in the Baiao and Oriximina municipalities located in the Para State. The number of malaria cases and the Annual Parasitic Incidence (API) recorde...
