Cartilage-Perichondrium Myringoplasty for Managing Intratympanic Membrane Cholesteatomas With Chronic Otitis Media in Adults
Conclusions: Endoscopic complete excision of an ITMC and cartilage-perichondrium graft without raising a tympanomeatal flap can lead to successful graft intake and improve the symptoms for the patients with ITMC combined with perforation or atrophic TM.PMID:38279828 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241227714 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Acute otitis media diagnosis in childhood: still a problem in 2023?
ConclusionsAOM diagnosis still represents a relevant issue among paediatricians in our country, and the presence of tympanic membrane hyperaemia without concomitant bulging can be confusing. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

Acute otitis media diagnosis in childhood: still a problem in 2023?
Diagnosis of acute otitis media (AOM) in children can be challenging, given that symptoms are often non-specific or absent, and that the direct observation of the tympanic membrane in its entirety through otos... (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

The views of parents and carers on managing acute otitis media in urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Parents and carers are key partners in managing acute otitis media in urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Our findings support shared decision making informed by the experience of parents and carers, which could also lead to reduced antibiotic use for managing acute otitis media.PMID:38266503 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52217 (Source: Med J Aust)

Otitis media: recent advances in otitis media vaccine development and model systems
Otitis media is an inflammatory disorder of the middle ear caused by airways-associated bacterial or viral infections. It is one of the most common childhood infections as globally more than 80% of children are diagnosed with acute otitis media by 3 years of age and it is a common reason for doctor’s visits, antibiotics prescriptions, and surgery among children. Otitis media is a multifactorial disease with various genetic, immunologic, infectious, and environmental factors predisposing children to develop ear infections. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis are the most common cu...

Lenz-Majewski syndrome and recurrent otitis media: Are they related or not?
Eur J Med Genet. 2024 Jan 21;68:104910. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmg.2024.104910. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLenz-Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism (LMHD) is a rare condition characterized by intellectual disability, sclerosing bone dysplasia, dysmorphic facial features, brachydactyly, symphalangism and cutis laxa. Nineteen cases have been reported in the literature so far, eleven of them with PTDSS1 mutations. Although studies have had clinically similar findings, in some cases the authors have reported even rarer features such as hydrocephalus, facial paralysis, and cleft palate. We, hereby, report the case of the first patient w...

Xylitol for the prevention of acute otitis media episodes in children aged 1-5 years: a randomised controlled trial
Conclusions Regular use of xylitol did not prevent AOM, URTIs or dental caries in a trial with limited statistical power. A post-hoc analysis indicated that URTIs were less common with xylitol exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic, but this finding could be spurious. Trial registration number NCT03055091. Early-career general practitioners ’ antibiotic prescribing for acute infections: a systematic review
ConclusionsEarly-career GPs prescribe fewer antibiotics than later-career GPs. However, there are still significant improvements to be made for common acute conditions, as their prescribing is higher than recommended benchmarks. Addressing antimicrobial resistance requires an ongoing worldwide effort and early-career GPs should be the target for long-term change. (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy)

Management of Conductive Hearing Loss from Otitis Media in Children Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology
Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss in children. Although middle ear effusions will often respond spontaneously, many children will develop Chronic OME (COME) and require tympanostomy tube placement to achieve consistent middle ear health and to normalize hearing. While tympanostomy tube placement is a simple procedure, it is essential for any Otolaryngologist that manages children to have an in-depth knowledge of current evidence-based guidelines for the management of otitis media in children, given the incredibly high prevalence of the condition and the high frequency of t...

An enormous epidural abscess secondary to cranial metastasis of a lung tumor
Orv Hetil. 2024 Jan 14;165(2):69-73. doi: 10.1556/650.2024.32943. Print 2024 Jan 14.ABSTRACTEpiduralis abscessus a leggyakrabban otitis media, sinusitis és mastoiditis következtében alakul ki. Ezekben az esetekben a kórokozók a legtöbbször a vénás és artériás rendszeren keresztül jutnak az epiduralis térbe, míg nyílt törések vagy idegsebészeti műtétek során direkt módon is kerülhetnek baktériumok a koponyacsont és a dura közé. Esetismertetésünk irodalmi ritkaságnak tekinthető, mivel az enormis nagyságú epiduralis tályog kialakulásában szerepet játszott a tüdődaganat áttéte miatt ki...

Effect of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease on Middle Ear Function: A Case –Control Study
ConclusionLaryngopharyngeal reflux disease can have silent manifestations in the ear in the form of altered middle ear function. This can lead to a wide spectrum of dysfunctions in the form of serous otitis media, retraction pockets and squamosal variant of chronic otitis media, which has its own set of complications. Hence, early management of LPRD can reduce possibility of middle ear disease. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)
