Antibiotics for acute otitis media in children
CONCLUSIONS: This review reveals that antibiotics probably have no effect on pain at 24 hours, a slight effect on pain in the days following and only a modest effect on the number of children with tympanic perforations, contralateral otitis episodes and abnormal tympanometry findings at two to four weeks compared with placebo in children with AOM. In high-income countries, most cases of AOM spontaneously remit without complications. The benefits of antibiotics must be weighed against the possible harms: for every 14 children treated with antibiotics, one child experienced an adverse event (such as vomiting, diarrhoea or ra...

Ventilation tubes (grommets) for otitis media with effusion (OME) in children
CONCLUSIONS: There may be small short- and medium-term improvements in hearing and persistence of OME with VTs, but it is unclear whether these persist after longer follow-up. The RCTs included do not allow us to say when (or how much) VTs improve hearing in any specific child. However, interpretation of the evidence is difficult: many children in the control groups recover spontaneously or receive VTs during follow-up, VTs may block or extrude, and OME may recur. The limited evidence in this review also affects the generalisability/applicability of our findings to situations involving children with underlying conditions (...

A Comparative Study of Button Hole Technique Versus Underlay Technique in Type 1 Tympanoplasty
ConclusionButtonhole technique is better in terms of graft uptake since the graft is anchored to the handle of malleus, and postoperatively medialisation of graft and other complications like lateralization of graft, epithelial pearl formation and anterior blunting is prevented. Both techniques are good in terms of hearing improvement for chronic otitis media with medium sized perforation with moderateconductive hearing loss. Do Decreased Mastoid Pneumatization, Bilateral Involvement and Eustachian Tube Function Affect the Success of Type 1 Tympanoplasty?
ConclusionPreoperative air-bone gap average is higher in ears with decreased mastoid pneumatization, and postoperative air-bone gap closure is higher in unilateral patients. Mastoid ventilation does not make a significant difference in the success of type 1 tympanoplasty. On the other hand, our results support that ET dysfunction can be effective in the occurrence of chronic otitis media (COM). (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Haemophilus influenzae isolates from otitis media in Bulgaria
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Nov 8. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.02126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHaemophilus influenzae is one of the main bacteria responsible for otitis media (OM) among children worldwide. We aimed to estimate the distribution of encapsulated and non-capsulated variants (NTHi), biotypes, antibiotic susceptibility, and molecular epidemiology of H. influenzae isolates recovered from pediatric OM cases in Bulgaria.Capsule detection was done by PCR for bexB gene, absent in NTHi. All encapsulated strains were subjected to PCR serotyping. MIC susceptibility testing was performed according to the criteria of...

Hearing characteristics and otoradiological abnormalities in three patients with novel pathogenic variants of KMT2D ‐related Kabuki syndrome
ConclusionsHearing characteristics of three individuals with three novel pathogenic variants ofKMT2D range from mild to profound fluctuating hearing loss with mild to moderate SNHL. HRCT scans showed that all three individuals had anatomical middle and inner ear abnormalities. KS 1 patients must get clinical therapy for OME, frequent auditory monitoring, and prompt intervention. A network-based approach to explore comorbidity patterns among community-dwelling older adults living alone
This study employed a network-based approach to investigate the comorbidity patterns of community-dwelling older adults living alone. The sample comprised a cross-sectional cohort of adults 65 or older living alone in a Korean city (n = 1041; mean age = 77.7 years, 77.6% women). A comorbidity network analysis that estimates networks aggregated from measures of significant co-occurrence between pairs of diseases was employed to investigate comorbid associations between 31 chronic conditions. A cluster detection algorithm was employed to identify specific clusters of comorbidities. The association strength was expre...
