Fibrocartilaginous embolism: a rare cause of cervical spine infarction
CONCLUSION: When a practitioner suspects that a patient may have fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE), they should take the patient's history and do a neurological examination. An MRI is required since it is thought to be the most accurate method of diagnosing FCE.PMID:38694385 | PMC:PMC11060198 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000002005 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Unilateral lateral rectus palsy following dengue: a case report
CONCLUSION: This is the first documented case report of paralytic squint post-severe dengue in Nepal, emphasizing the importance of considering it as a differential diagnosis in tropical regions with endemic dengue infections. The case report advocates early identification and treatment of ophthalmic issues, notably with prednisolone, to achieve favourable outcomes, as evidenced by improvements in visual acuity, esotropia, and diplopia during follow-ups. Further research is essential to determine optimal treatment strategies for such neurological complications associated with dengue fever.PMID:38694359 | PMC:PMC11060301 | ...

Bardet-Biedl syndrome with unique manifestations of congenital giant nevi and refractory anemia: a case report from Palestine
CONCLUSION: This case underscores BBS's rarity and complexity, featuring unique aspects like giant nevi and refractory IDA. Comprehensive management addresses renal, visual, cardiac, and neurologic aspects. Genetic counselling, prenatal testing, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis prevent transmission. Limitations include lacking local epidemiological data and prior studies in Palestine. This case contributes insights, stressing multidisciplinary management and prompting further research in underexplored populations.PMID:38694397 | PMC:PMC11060271 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001954 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Incidental diagnosis of primary appendiceal signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma after appendectomy for acute appendicitis: a case report
CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis of ASCA can incidentally be made on pathological specimen following appendectomy for appendicitis. A routine pathological examination should be emphasized, and appendectomy may not be the endpoint of the treatment. Hemicolectomy and adjuvant therapy might ensue upon the diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasm. The poor prognosis of ASCA makes a timely diagnosis significant. Basic research is promising to unravel the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, finding typical tumor markers for screening and novel effective therapies for advanced cases.PMID:38694365 | PMC:PMC11060291 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000...

Iron chelators: as therapeutic agents in diseases
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2024 Mar 19;86(5):2759-2776. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001717. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTThe concentration of iron is tightly regulated, making it an essential element. Various cellular processes in the body rely on iron, such as oxygen sensing, oxygen transport, electron transfer, and DNA synthesis. Iron excess can be toxic because it participates in redox reactions that catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species and elevate oxidative stress. Iron chelators are chemically diverse; they can coordinate six ligands in an octagonal sequence. Because of the ability of chelators to trap essentia...

Absence of ATM leads to altered NK cell function in mice
Clin Immunol. 2024 Apr 30:110233. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2024.110233. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtaxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare disorder caused by genetic defects of A-T mutated (ATM) kinase, a key regulator of stress response, and characterized by neurodegeneration, immunodeficiency, and high incidence of cancer. Here we investigated NK cells in a mouse model of A-T (Atm-/-) showing that they are strongly impaired at killing tumor cells due to a block of early signaling events. On the other hand, in Atm-/- littermates with thymic lymphoma NK cell cytotoxicity is enhanced as compared with ATM-proficient mice, possib...

ST2 levels and neurodegenerative diseases: is this a significant relation?
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2024 Mar 12;86(5):2812-2817. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001939. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTInterleukin-33 (IL-33), belonging to the interleukin-1 cytokine family, has a decoy receptor soluble ST2 (sST2). IL-33 is found in oligodendrocytes and astrocytes and is involved in central nervous system healing and repair, whereas ST2 is found in microglia and astrocytes. Some studies have found a link between changes in the IL-33/ST2 pathway and neurodegenerative disorders. This review article investigates the relationship between the interleukin-33 (IL-33)/ST2 pathway and neurodegenerative disorders. It was...

Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy (LITT) in Recurrent Glioblastoma: What Window of Opportunity for This Treatment?
We describe the most recent updates regarding several studies and case reports that have evaluated the efficacy and safety of Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy for recurrent gliomas. These studies have reported different outcomes, with some demonstrating promising results in terms of tumor control and patient survival, while others have shown mixed outcomes. The success of Laser Interstitial Thermotherapy depends on various factors, including tumor characteristics, patient selection, and the experience of the surgical team, but the future direction of treatment of recurrent gliomas will include a combined approach, comprisi...
