Testing on bacterial vaginosis in a subfertile population and time to pregnancy: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionThis study indicates that BV may have a potential negative impact on time to live birth pregnancy in subfertile persons with an indication for fertility treatment. This study did not find an association between BV and time to live birth pregnancy in a general group of subfertile couples or in unexplained subfertility. More research should be done in persons with unexplained subfertility and if treatment improves time to pregnancy. (Source: Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics)

Assessing quality of hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery: nationwide benchmarking
CONCLUSION: Current event rates and minimum volume requirements per hospital are too low to detect any meaningful between hospital differences in mortality rate and FTR. Enabling nurses' engagement in the design of healthcare technology - Core competencies and requirements: A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Nurses experience their involvement in the design process as essential, distinctive, and meaningful but experience few possibilities to combine this work with their current workload, flows, routines, and requirements. To participate in the design of health care technologies nurses need motivation and specific competencies. Organizations should facilitate time for nurses to acquire the required competencies and to be intentionally involved in technology design and development activities.PMID:38746818 | PMC:PMC11080470 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijnsa.2023.100170 (Source: Adv Data)

COVID-19 measures implemented for nursing home staff and their perspectives on the importance of the measures: A qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: We showed that although nursing home staff were not always involved in decision-making during the first COVID-19 wave, there was overlap between the measures implemented by the organizations and measures considered important by staff. We suggest that organizations should be encouraged to explore ways of promoting timely involvement of staff in decision-making; for example, through monitoring staff needs and well-being and giving staff more autonomy to deviate from standard measures during future outbreaks or medical emergencies.PMID:38746806 | PMC:PMC11080563 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijnsa.2023.100163 (Source: Adv Data)

Effects of nurse delivered thoracic ultrasound on management of adult intensive care unit patients: A prospective observational study
CONCLUSION: In adult intensive care unit patients, UltraNurse thoracic ultrasound led to a change of management in more than a quarter of the cases, of which almost all were executed within the first 8 hours.STUDY REGISTRATION: Netherlands Trial Registration NL9047, VUmc 2020.011 (prospectively registered on: 13-11-2020).PMID:38746565 | PMC:PMC11080432 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijnsa.2023.100135 (Source: Adv Data)

Reasons for unsuccessful recruitment of children with atopic dermatitis in primary care in the Netherlands to a cohort study with an embedded pragmatic, randomised controlled open-label trial: a survey
Conclusion The main reason why cohort participants did not take part in the trial was that they did not contact their GPs when they experienced an AD flare-up. Furthermore, the majority of patients who contacted their GPs did not match the inclusion criteria of the trial. We expect that the lessons learnt from this study will be useful when developing future studies of children with AD in primary care. (Source: BMJ Open)

Costs and health effects of CT perfusion-based selection for endovascular thrombectomy within 6 hours of stroke onset: a model-based health economic evaluation
Conclusion In EVT-eligible patients presenting within 6 hours after symptom onset, excluding patients based on CTP parameters was not cost-effective and could potentially harm patients. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

Celiac Disease Moves Into the Current Era of Modern Medicine
It is approaching 75 years since Dr W. K. Dicke from The Netherlands published his observations that the protein component of wheat was the cause of celiac disease. Although for many years advances have lagged, in part due to insufficient funding and misconceptions about the true nature of this disease, significant strides have been achieved in the past 3 decades, setting the stage for an accelerated pace of discovery over the past 10 years. This recent acceleration in knowledge, triggered by the seminal work of dedicated basic and clinical investigators working side by side, has propelled us forward, leading to major adva...
