Health problems among elite Dutch youth long track speed skaters: a one-season prospective study
CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated a high prevalence of acute and repetitive mechanism injuries in speed skating. These results can guide future research and priorities for injury prevention.PMID:38777387 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107433 (Source: British Journal of Sports Medicine)

Urinary Tract Infection Guideline Adherence in a Dutch Sentinel Nursing Home Surveillance Network
To investigate guideline adherence 3 years after the introduction of a national guideline on urinary tract infections (UTIs) in frail older adults. Appropriate use of urine dipstick tests, treatment decisions, and antibiotic drug choices in residents with (suspected) UTIs without a catheter were examined. Five-year follow-up of the iBerry Study: screening in early adolescence to identify those at risk of psychopathology in emerging adulthood
AbstractThe iBerry Study, a Dutch population-based high-risk cohort (n = 1022) examines the transition from subclinical symptoms to psychiatric disorders in adolescents. Here, we present the first follow-up measurement, approximately 3 years after baseline assessment and 5 years after the screening based on self-reported emotional and behavioral problems (SDQ-Y) . We give an update on the data collection, details on the (non)response, and the results on psychopathology outcomes. The first follow-up (2019–2022) had a response rate of 79% (n = 807). Our results at baseline (mean age 15.0 years) have shown the ef...

Mutation p.Arg127Pro in the 1A Domain of KRT16 Causes Pachyonychia Congenita in Chinese Patient: A Case Report of PC Associated with Acral Melanoma
Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol. 2024 May 16;17:1111-1116. doi: 10.2147/CCID.S462273. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTPachyonychia congenita (PC) is a group of rare hereditary disorders, characterised by hypertrophic nails and palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), particularly localised to the pressure areas of the feet. At a molecular level, it is caused by mutations in genes encoding KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, or KRT17. To identify the underlying gene mutation in a Chinese family with PC presenting with disabling palmoplantar keratoderma and subsequent associated acral melanoma. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples ...

Applying machine learning to international drug monitoring: classifying cannabis resin collected in Europe using cannabinoid concentrations
In conclusion, we provide proof-of-concept evidence for the potential of machine learning to inform international drug monitoring. Our findings should not be interpreted as objective confirmatory evidence but suggest that Dutch-type cannabis resin has higher THC concentrations than Moroccan-type cannabis resin, which may contribute to variation in drug markets and health outcomes for people who use cannabis in Europe.PMID:38771330 | DOI:10.1007/s00406-024-01816-w (Source: European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience)

Safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of an intranasal seasonal influenza vaccine adjuvanted with gram-positive matrix (GEM) particles (FluGEM): A randomized, double-blind, controlled, ascending dose study in healthy adults and elderly
CONCLUSIONS: Intranasal vaccination of FluGEM®was safe and tolerable in healthy adult volunteers aged 18-49 years and 65 and older. Highest immunogenicity was observed for 1.25 mg and 2.5 mg doses (compared to 5 mg) suggesting a potential non-linear dose-response relationship.More research is needed to further investigate the capabilities of bacteria-like peptides as adjuvants.PMID:38772837 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.063 (Source: Vaccine)

Translocated wild birds are predisposed to learn songs of their ancestral population
Curr Biol. 2024 May 16:S0960-9822(24)00535-9. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.04.061. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPopulation differences in socially learned mating signals like oscine birdsong are particularly vulnerable to breakdown through dispersal.1 Despite this challenge, geographic variation in learned signals is ubiquitous.2 A proposed explanation for this pattern is that birds express predispositions to selectively learn and produce population-typical songs.3,4,5 While experimental studies on lab-reared birds have shown the existence of within-species learning predispositions,6,7,8,9,10 it remains unclear whether and how...

Disentangling the heterogeneity of multiple sclerosis through identification of independent neuropathological dimensions
AbstractMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a heterogeneous neurological disorder with regards to clinical presentation and pathophysiology. Here, we investigated the heterogeneity of MS by performing an exploratory factor analysis on quantitative and qualitative neuropathology data collected for 226 MS donors in the Netherlands Brain Bank autopsy cohort. Three promising dimensions were identified and subsequently validated with clinical, neuropathological, and genetic data. Dimension 1 ranged from a predominance of remyelinated and inactive lesions to extensive pathological changes, higher proportions of active and mixed lesions, ...
