Diabetes and risk of acute coronary syndrome in callers with chest discomfort: Cross-sectional study in out-of-hours primary care
At out-of-hours primary care (OHS-PC), triage nurses are supported by a semi-automatic decision support tool, which is in the Netherlands the ‘Netherlands Triage Standard’ (NTS), to assist them in the complex process of telephone triage [1–3]. The triage nurse can choose out of 56 entrance complaints in the NTS system, one being ‘chest pain’. The NTS system displays hierarchically ordered triage questions, on average five, for c onsidering severity and thus urgency allocation which is a response time that ranges from U1 to U5. Students ’ and junior doctors’ perspectives on radiology education in medical school: a qualitative study in the Netherlands
Modern medicine becomes more dependent on radiologic imaging techniques. Over the past decade, radiology has also gained more attention in the medical curricula. However, little is known with regard to student... (Source: BMC Medical Education)

The Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure of the Multicenter Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research Biobank: A Potential Blueprint for Other Biobanks
Conclusion: The IT infrastructure of the AOCR biobank represents a new standard for biobanks, offering flexibility to handle diverse diseases and types of biomaterials. This infrastructure bypasses the need for disease-specific, custom-built software, thereby being cost- and time-effective while ensuring data quality and legislative compliance. The adaptability of this infrastructure highlights its potential to serve as a blueprint for the development of IT infrastructures in both new and existing biobanks.PMID:38682281 | DOI:10.1089/bio.2023.0118 (Source: Biopreservation and Biobanking)

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for hospital admission in COVID-19 patients presenting to primary care
CONCLUSION: We derived a risk model using readily available variables at GP assessment to predict hospital admission for COVID-19. It performed accurately across regions and waves. Further validation on cohorts with acquired immunity and newer SARS-CoV-2 variants is recommended.PMID:38682305 | DOI:10.1080/13814788.2024.2339488 (Source: European Journal of General Practice)

The Evolution of Drug Regulatory Sciences in the Netherlands: More than a Country Report
Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2024 Apr 28. doi: 10.1002/cpt.3275. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the Netherlands, drug regulatory science is a vibrant national and internationally oriented community. In this review, we present the factors that have contributed to this successful collaboration between relevant stakeholders and that led to a surge of activities around how regulatory science became embedded in the ecosystem of medicines research, clinical pharmacology, policymaking and regulation. We distinguished three pivotal episodes: (i) TI Pharma Escher-project, (ii) Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board as catalyst of the big jump,...

Psychosocial and medication interventions to stop or reduce alcohol consumption during pregnancy
CONCLUSIONS: Brief psychosocial interventions may increase the rate of continuous abstinence among pregnant women who report alcohol use during pregnancy. Further studies should be conducted to investigate the efficacy and safety of psychosocial interventions and other treatments (e.g. medications) for women with AUD. These studies should provide detailed information on alcohol use before and during pregnancy using consistent measures such as the number of drinks per drinking day. When heterogeneous populations are recruited, more detailed information on alcohol use during pregnancy should be provided to allow future syste...

Tracking real-time proximity in daily life: A new tool to examine social interactions
We examined the use of this novel method by exploring proximity patterns of family interactions among 233 participants (77 Dutch families, with 77 adolescents [Mage = 15.9] and 145 parents [Mage = 48.9]) for 14 consecutive days. Overall, proximity-based analyses indicated that adolescents were more often and longer in proximity to mothers than to fathers, with large differences between families in frequency and duration. Proximity-triggered evaluations of the interactions and parenting behavior were generally positive for both fathers and mothers. This innovative method is a promising tool that can be broadly used in other...
