Regression calibration of self-reported mobile phone use to optimize quantitative risk estimation in the COSMOS study
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 May 13:kwae039. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Cohort Study of Mobile Phone Use and Health (COSMOS) has repeatedly collected self-reported and operator-recorded data on mobile phone use. Assessing health effects using self-reported information is prone to measurement error, but operator data were available prospectively for only part of the study population and did not cover past mobile phone use. To optimize the available data and reduce bias, we evaluated different statistical approaches for constructing mobile phone exposure histories within COSMOS. We evaluated and comp...

Tobacco control policies and respiratory conditions among children presenting in primary care
NPJ Prim Care Respir Med. 2024 May 16;34(1):11. doi: 10.1038/s41533-024-00369-8.ABSTRACTTobacco control policies can protect child health. We hypothesised that the parallel introduction in 2008 of smoke-free restaurants and bars in the Netherlands, a tobacco tax increase and mass media campaign, would be associated with decreases in childhood wheezing/asthma, respiratory tract infections (RTIs), and otitis media with effusion (OME) presenting in primary care. We conducted an interrupted time series study using electronic medical records from the Dutch Integrated Primary Care Information database (2000-2016). We estimated s...

Analysis of the ethical issues in authorship of collaborative research. Observations inspired by the historical case study of Gerard L. Blaes' (Blasius) claim to sole authorship of ‘Anatome medullae spinalis’
AbstractThis paper discusses the historical context of collaborative research and authorship disputes, exemplified by the complex relationship between Dutch anatomist and physician Gerard L. Blaes and his East-Central European mentee, Daniel G ödtke, during the study of medulla spinalis. The study employs historical analysis to unravel the dynamics of scholarly collaboration, emphasizing the significance of mentorship in scientific progress and the communal nature of knowledge exchange. This historical analysis is based on primary source s and historical records. It underscores Blaes's strategy to circumvent public confro...

An innovative method to strengthen evidence for potential drug safety signals using Electronic Health Records
This study aims to explore the feasibility of using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to identify additional cases based on initial indications from spontaneous ADR reports, with the goal of strengthening the evidence base for potential safety signals. For two confirmed and two potential signals generated by the SRS of the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb, targeted searches in the EHR of the Leiden University Medical Centre were performed using a text-mining based tool, CTcue. The search for additional cases was done by constructing and running queries in the structured and free-text fields of the EHRs. We identif...

An outbreak of Legionnaires ’ disease linked to a municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plant, The Netherlands, September–October 2022
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are increasingly identified as Legionnaires’ disease (LD) sources. An outbreak investigation was initiated following five LD cases reported in September 2022 in Houten, the Netherlands. Case identification was based on the European LD case definition, with symptom onset from 1 September 2022, residence in or within 5 km of Houten, or visit to Houten within the incubation period, without other likely sources. We sampled potential sources and genotyped environmental and clinical isolates. We identified 15 LD cases with onset between 13 September and 23 October 2022....

Explorative observational study of Dutch patient-clinician interactions: operationalisation of personal perspective elicitation as part of shared decision-making in real-life audio-recorded consultations
Conclusions The operationalisation of PPE, an important aspect of SDM, explores which preferences, values and contexts were discussed during patient–clinician interactions where an ePDA was used. The coding scheme appeared feasible to apply but needs further refinement. (Source: BMJ Open)
