Celiac Disease Moves Into the Current Era of Modern Medicine
It is approaching 75 years since Dr W. K. Dicke from The Netherlands published his observations that the protein component of wheat was the cause of celiac disease. Although for many years advances have lagged, in part due to insufficient funding and misconceptions about the true nature of this disease, significant strides have been achieved in the past 3 decades, setting the stage for an accelerated pace of discovery over the past 10 years. This recent acceleration in knowledge, triggered by the seminal work of dedicated basic and clinical investigators working side by side, has propelled us forward, leading to major advancements in the diagnosis and clinical care of patients with celiac disease today.
