Monitoring thyroid function during amiodarone use
Br J Hosp Med (Lond). 2024 Jan 2;85(1):1-5. doi: 10.12968/hmed.2023.0214. Epub 2024 Jan 31.ABSTRACTAmiodarone is an antiarrhythmic drug used to treat cardiac tachyarrhythmias. It has many adverse effects, with thyroid dysfunction one of the most notable. Through various mechanisms, both thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism can occur secondary to amiodarone therapy. There are two types of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis: type 1 occurs in those with pre-existing thyroid disease and is treated with thionamide, whereas type 2 occurs in those without and is treated with glucocorticoids. Patients with amiodarone-induced hypothyro...

Comparison of pathophysiology in subclinical hyperthyroidism with different etiologies
Endocr J. 2024 Jan 31. doi: 10.1507/endocrj.EJ23-0497. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubclinical hyperthyroidism (SHyper) is defined as normal levels of free thyroxine (fT4) and free triiodothyronine (fT3) with suppressed levels of TSH. Previous studies have reported the individual pathophysiology of endogenous SHyper patients and athyreotic patients receiving TSH suppression therapy with levothyroxine; however, apparently no studies have compared the two conditions. Five-hundred-forty untreated endogenous SHyper patients and 1,024 patients receiving TSH suppression therapy who underwent total thyroidectomy for papillary t...

Morning exercise affects the absorption of oral levothyroxine: a single center pilot study
ConclusionsThis is the first study which demonstrates the significant positive effect of morning exercise on the absorption of LT4 tablets. In addition to that, it was also found that as the daily dose of LT4 increases, the percentage decrease of TSH level becomes greater. (Source: Endocrine)

Autoimmune Implications in a Patient with Graves' Hyperthyroidism, Pre-eclampsia with Severe Features, and Primary Aldosteronism
Conclusions: This patient manifested severe GD with antibodies undetectable by conventional TSI and TSH receptor assays and accelerated hypertension from PA simultaneously. These conditions were successfully treated separately by spironolactone and thyroidectomy. Autoimmune PA was considered likely given the clinical picture. The diagnosis of PA should be considered in hypertension with GD.PMID:38256430 | PMC:PMC10820415 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60010170 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Drug-induced hypothyroidism in tuberculosis
Expert Rev Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Jan 19:1-8. doi: 10.1080/17446651.2024.2307525. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Adverse reactions to tuberculosis treatment can impact patient adherence and prognosis. Hypothyroidism is a frequent adverse reaction caused using ethionamide, prothionamide, and para-aminosalicylic acid and is often underdiagnosed.AREAS COVERED: We searched Scielo, Scopus, and EMBASE databases, including 67 articles. Antitubercular drug-induced hypothyroidism has a prevalence of 17%. It occurs after 2 to 3 months of treatment and resolves within 4 to 6 weeks after discontinuation. It is postulated ...
