The effect of low-level laser therapy on the oxidative stress level and quality of life in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis
This study aimed to examine the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) combined with levothyroxine replacement therapy on thyroid function, oxidative stress (OS), and quality of life in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Forty-six patients diagnosed with HT were randomized to receive active LLLT (n = 23) and sham LLLT (n = 23) twice a week for three weeks. Clinical and laboratory evaluations of the participants were performed before treatment and three months after treatment. Biochemical parameters were taken from the patient file requested by the physician as a routine examination. Malondialdehyde and nitricox...

Increased risk of diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DTC had an increased risk of CMD, especially DM and hyperlipidemia, but a low risk of CMD mortality. Special attention to metabolic diseases is required in the long-term follow-up of patients with DTC.PMID:38536878 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae026 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Potential risks and benefits of desiccated thyroid extract for the treatment of hypothyroidism: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Most studies of DTE treatment are hampered by an inferior design, and data on long-term effects and side effects are lacking. Two RCTs could not demonstrate any difference in QoL or symptom scores when comparing DTE with other thyroid hormone substitutions. Future trials of DTE in patients with hypothyroidism should be based on adequate study designs, validated measures of QoL, patients with reduced QoL, and the assessment of biomarkers reflecting long-term adverse effects.PMID:38526391 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0649 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Thyroid hormone homeostasis in levothyroxine-treated patients: Findings from ELSA-Brasil
CONCLUSION: The present results challenge the dogma that treatment with LT4 for hypothyroidism restores TH homeostasis in all patients. A substantial number of LT4-treated patients exhibit repeated FT4 and FT3 levels outside the normal reference range, despite normal TSH levels. Further studies are needed to define the clinical implications of these findings.PMID:38506164 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae139 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
