Association of Mild Iodine Insufficiency during Pregnancy with Child Neurodevelopment in Patients with Subclinical Hypothyroidism or Hypothyroxinemia
Conclusion Maternal urinary iodine concentrations ≤150 μg/L were not associated with abnormal cognitive or behavioral outcomes in offspring of participants with either subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroxinemia. Levothyroxine attenuates behavioral impairment and improves oxidative stress and histological alteration 3-nitropropionic acid induced experimental Huntington's disease in rats
Behav Brain Res. 2024 Mar 12;461:114864. doi: 10.1016/j.bbr.2024.114864. Epub 2024 Jan 12.ABSTRACTHuntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by degeneration of the striatum; it results in oxidative stress and motor deficits. Thyroid hormones regulate oxidative metabolism. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of administration of levothyroxine (LT-4) on neurobehavioral, oxidative stress, and histological changes in a rat model of HD. Forty-eight Wistar male rats were divided into the following six groups (n = 8): Group 1 (control) received physiological saline intraperitoneally (ip). Gr...

Natural desiccated thyroid for the treatment of hypothyroidism?
Primary hypothyroidism affects about 3% of the general population in Europe. Early treatments in the late 19th Century involved subcutaneous as well as oral administration of thyroid extract. Until the early 1970s, the majority of people across the world with hypothyroidism were treated with natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) (derived from pig thyroid glands) in various formulations, with the majority of people since then being treated with levothyroxine (L-thyroxine). There is emerging evidence that may account for the efficacy of liothyronine (NDT contains a mixture of levothyroxine and liothyronine) in people who are symp...

Bioavailability of Orally Administered Drugs After Bariatric Surgery
AbstractPurpose of ReviewOral drug absorption after bariatric surgery is likely to be altered, but the impact of different bariatric surgery procedures on individual drugs is not uniform. The aim of this article is to describe factors influencing the bioavailability of orally administered drugs after bariatric surgery and to provide readers with practical recommendations for drug dosing. We also discuss the medications that may be harmful after bariatric surgery.Recent FindingsThe fundamental factors for enteral drug absorption are the production of gastric acid; the preserved length of the intestine, i.e., the size of the...

Stimulating thyroglobulin to TSH ratio predict long-term efficacy of 131I therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer after total thyroidectomy: a retrospective study
ConclusionsFor patients with moderate-to-high-risk DTC, when sTg>7.515  ug/L and/or sTg/TSH >  0.095 before the first131I therapy, patients are more likely to have a poor long-term efficacy after full131I therapy. This means that this group of patients may require further surgical treatment or targeted drug therapy after131I therapy. (Source: Endocrine)

Acute flaccid paralysis, seizures, and encephalopathy in a pediatric patient with influenza A and COVID-19 infection
We report a case of AFP and encephalopathy in a 4-year-old female with a history of hypothyroidism (on levothyroxine; previously healthy otherwise), associated with acute influenza A and recent COVID-19 co-infection. Patient presented with new onset focal motor seizures with impaired awareness 6 days into a febrile upper respiratory illness in November 2022. On presentation, her vital signs were within normal limits. She had recently recovered from COVID-19 infection in the preceding 3 weeks (of note, this was her second COVID infection; initial infection was in January 2022). (Source: Pediatric Neurology)

Maternal Thyroid Dysfunction During Pregnancy as an Etiologic Factor in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Challenges and Opportunities for Research
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, evidence supported a positive association between maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and ASD outcomes in the child, especially for hypothyroidism. Future studies could reduce misclassification bias by using laboratory measures instead of medical records to ascertain thyroid dysfunction and evaluating children for ASD at an age when it can be reliably detected. Survival bias could be further mitigated by adjusting models for more factors associated with fetal survival and ASD. Additional research is needed to comprehensively understand the roles of maternal levothyroxine treatment, iodine de...
