Mature cystic teratoma of the pancreas: role of endoscopic ultrasound
Cystic teratomas are a rare type of germ cell neoplasms derived from one or more germ layers. They can be classified as mature and immature teratomas based on the maturity of neuroectodermal elements within the tumor. Mature teratomas are benign, well-differentiated lesions, which may be solid or cystic. Mature cystic teratomas (MCTs) are also called dermoid cysts – a term likely coming from early surgical literature when the resected cysts resembled skin. Immature teratomas are malignant, undifferentiated tumors and generally solid. (Source: Pancreatology)

The usefulness of 18F-FDG-PET/CT in discriminating benign from malignant ovarian teratomas
Conclusions 18F-FDG-PET/CT has a high diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing between benign and malignant ovarian teratomas. Thus, PET/CT may be useful in cases where the diagnosis is unclear on MRI and other clinical findings. However, some MTs with abundant CNS tissue may have a high SUVmax. Therefore, the diagnosis of a benign or malignant lesion should be made carefully in conjunction with other clinical findings. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Mature and immature teratoma: A report from the second Italian pediatric study
ConclusionsTeratomas show a good prognosis, especially the mature ones: surgery and follow‐up remain the standard approach. Incomplete surgery in immature teratoma is the group at greatest risk of relapse. Bilateral ovarian tumors are a possibility, and the rare family predisposition to ovarian mature teratoma warrants further analyses. Pediatr Blood Cancer © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. NUT protein immunoreactivity in ovarian germ cell tumours
SummaryThe aim of this study was to investigate NUT (nuclear protein in the testis) expression in ovarian germ cell tumours (GCTs). Immunostaining for NUT protein was performed in 10 mature cystic teratomas and in 49 malignant ovarian GCTs including 15 pure dysgerminomas, six dysgerminomas associated with gonadoblastoma, nine yolk sac tumours, 12 immature teratomas, and seven mixed malignant tumours. Only nuclear staining was considered a positive finding although cytoplasmic staining was noted when present. Thirty-seven (76%) malignant GCTs were NUT positive but staining was usually of weak to moderate intensity and obser...

Central nervous system teratomas in infants: A report of two cases.
Abstract Intracranial teratomas are uncommon neoplasms with most of them being encountered in the pediatric age group. Teratomas are composed of derivatives of all the three germ cell layers and are classified into mature, immature and teratoma with malignant transformation. Two cases of intracranial teratomas in infants are presented here with the idea of highlighting this relatively uncommon condition in an uncommon age. Feline Coccygeal Teratoma: Immunohistochemical Characterization of Immature Tissue Components
This report describes a congenital coccygeal teratoma in a male Burmese cat. A round to oval expansile mass with solid and cystic areas was found ventral to the 5th to 7th caudal vertebrae. Microscopically, the tumour was composed of derivatives of all three primordial germ layers with neuroectodermal predominance. Immunohistochemical double labelling identified immature tissue components in combination with Sox2, a regulator of stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Few Sox2-positive cells co-expressed the neural crest stem cell markers vimentin and neurotrophin receptor p75NTR. Not all Sox2- and p75NTR-positive cel...

Congenital teratoma of the neck: A case report and literature review
We present a case of a cervical immature teratoma in an infant with total excision and cure. No recurrence has been reported. The aim of our study is to review the diagnosis, management and outcomes of congenital cervical teratomas. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences)

Surgical Management of Immature Teratoma Involving the Oral Cavity and Orbit in a Neonate
AbstractTeratomas are congenital germ cell tumors composed of elements from 1 or more of the embryonic germ layers and contain tissues usually foreign to the anatomic site of origin. In the head and neck region, these lesions are rare, and 90% of head and neck teratomas present during the neonatal and infantile periods. Besides, in neonates, it carries serious risk for respiratory distress as well as feeding problems due to oral cavity and airway obstruction. Here, an unusual case of intraoral teratoma involving the orbit in a newborn who underwent immediate surgical excision successfully is described. Expression pattern of clinically relevant markers in paediatric germ cell- and sex-cord stromal tumours is similar to adult testicular tumours
Abstract Paediatric germ cell tumours (GCTs) are rare and account for less than 3 % of childhood cancers. Like adult GCTs, they probably originate from primordial germ cells, but the pattern of histopathological types is different, and they occur predominantly in extragonadal sites along the body midline. Because they are rare, histology of paediatric GCTs is poorly documented, and it remains unclear to what extent they differ from adult GCTs. We have analysed 35 paediatric germ cell tumours and 5 gonadal sex-cord stromal tumours from prepubertal patients aged 0–15 years, to gain further knowledge, ...

Secondary malignant transformation of testicular teratomas: Case series and literature review
Conclusion The transformation of germ cell tumors to somatic type malignancies is rare. The malignant component can originate from any of the three germ lines. These tumors are resistant to standard chemotherapy for a germ cell tumor and the clinical stage is the most important prognostic factor. At our institution, the malignant component that appeared most frequently was chondrosarcoma. (Source: Actas Urologicas Espanolas)

Gonadal germ cell tumors in children and adolescents
Conclusion: Patients with gonadal malignant GCTs fare better than those with extragonadal mediastinal germ cell tumors (MGCTs) and survival rate exceeds 90% in localized forms. Chemotherapy has significantly improved the outcome of malignant forms since the introduction of platinum based regimens. The surgical procedure has to be performed in agreement with the ongoing protocols. (Source: Journal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons)

Sacrococcygeal teratoma: management and outcomes
ConclusionAwareness about this pathology among practitioners is essential and would have avoided complications in this series. Early diagnosis and complete excision with removal of the coccyx is associated with good prognosis. Recurrence is related to tumor spillage during excision. Long-term lower gastrointestinal problems (constipation, fecal soiling) correlate with Altman’s classification of the tumor. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

[Peritoneal gliomatosis.]
CONCLUSION: The association of peritoneal gliomatosis ovarian teratomas is rare. Although the primary treatment and patient monitoring is focused on the teratoma, control should be maintained of peritoneal implants because of the possibility of malignancy. We believe it would be beneficial to establish a protocol for monitoring these lesions. PMID: 25167355 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Cirugia y Cirujanos)
