A Scholarly Dialog on Recent Trends in NIH Funding for the Thyroid Field
CONCLUSION: These results constitute a very concerning scenario for research and education in the thyroid field. We appeal that the NIH, the professional societies in endocrinology and thyroidology, and all other relevant stakeholders such as thyroid-related professionals and thyroid patients engage in further discussions to identify the root causes of this trend and implement an action plan to stabilize and eventually reverse this situation.PMID:38661525 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2024.0084 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Differential Impact In Vivo of Pf4- ΔCre-Mediated and Gp1ba-ΔCre-Mediated Depletion of Cyclooxygenase-1 in Platelets in Mice
CONCLUSIONS: Both approaches to Cox-1 deletion similarly restrain thrombogenesis, but a differential impact on Cox-1-dependent prostanoid formation by the vasculature may contribute to an inflammatory phenotype and accelerated atherogenesis in Pf4-ΔCre mice.PMID:38660804 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320295 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Role of Physician Extenders in Resident Education and Dermatology Practice
The landscape of modern medicine has shifted due to an increasing demand for services amidst physician shortages and a push for cost-effective care. In dermatology, non-physician clinicians (NPCs), such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, have helped to augment the workforce and expand access to specialized dermatologic services. In certain academic programs, NPCs are included in resident didactic lectures and even offered postgraduate training opportunities. Their ascent has stirred discussions about the nuances of clinical training, the scope of practice, and the dynamics of physician-led teams. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

NIH boosts pay for postdocs and graduate students
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced pay increases today for early-career scientists who are recipients of its Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs), after an NIH advisory group recommended raises in December 2023 . Postdocs will now be paid at least $61,008, an increase of $4500 over their current minimum salary level—though still below the advisory group’s recommendation of $70,000. Graduate students will receive a $1000 raise, bringing their minimum to $28,224. NIH also announced a $500 increase in child care subsidies for early-career researchers who are parents. ...

Dual Basicity and Nucleophilicity of Organosodium Reagents in Benzylic C-H Additions of Toluenes to Diarylethenes and Ketones
Chemistry. 2024 Apr 23:e202400492. doi: 10.1002/chem.202400492. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProfiting from the dual high basicity and nucleophilicity of organosodium complexes, here we report the stepwise lateral metalation of a wide range of alkyl arenes (MeAr), mediated by hydrocarbon-soluble NaCH2SiMe3.PMDETA (PMDETA = N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine), followed by nucleophilic addition to olenfins of the newly generated NaCH2Ar.PMDETA complexes. This method grants access to a range of functionalised hydrocarbons in excellent yields and can be upgraded to catalytic regimes when using trans-stilbene, a 10 m...

Risk of Iron Deficiency in Women With Endometriosis: A Population-Based Prospective Cohort Study
Endometriosis may be linked to the risk of iron deficiency through chronic systemic inflammation or heavy menstrual bleeding. No longitudinal studies, however, have examined the relationship between endometriosis and the risk of iron deficiency. (Source: Womens Health Issues)

Overcoming Barriers to Implementation: Improving Incidental Coronary Calcium Reporting on Non-EKG Gated Chest CT Scans
The 2018 AHA/ACC Multisociety Blood Cholesterol Guideline1 states that the use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring is reasonable to inform statin therapy decision-making in those borderline or intermediate-risk patients with uncertainty about the need for statin therapy after consideration of risk-enhancing factors. The basis for its use rests on its ability to improve discrimination and reclassify risk as compared to that derived from risk equations based on traditional atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk factors. A mismatch between early and recent life stress predicts better response inhibition, but not cognitive inhibition
Stress. 2024 Jan;27(1):2341626. doi: 10.1080/10253890.2024.2341626. Epub 2024 Apr 22.ABSTRACTA growing body of work has found that a mismatch between early and recent life stress, more than a cumulative influence of stress, contributes to detrimental stress-related health outcomes. To date, however, no work has examined how such a mismatch might relate to stress-related cognitive outcomes. We addressed this gap in the current study by assessing participants' (N = 154, Mage = 18.7, 104 female) early and recent life stress using the same inventory, and subsequently assessing their inhibitory control in a hybrid stop-signal/f...
