310. Higher Infant Cortisol Levels Associated With Maternal Childhood Neglect and Larger Limbic Volumes
This study examined whether a) maternal childhood abuse or neglect is associated with infant cortisol output, b) infant cortisol is associated with infant limbic brain volumes, and c) infant cortisol mediates any relation between maternal childhood maltreatment and infant limbic brain volumes. The Ethics of Full Body Skin Exams (FBSE)
Full body skin examinations (FBSEs) are part of the purview of a dermatologic exam. Because this involves examination of sensitive or “intimate” areas, there are many ethical issues involved. Herein we discuss whether screening patients with a FBSE is ethical and consistent with the ethical tenet of distributive justice, how to ethically deal with our disabled patients, how to ethically navigate patients who have been emotiona lly or physically traumatized in the past, and the ethical ramifications of the use of a chaperone. What Happens After a Neural Implant Study? Neuroethics Expert Workshop on Post-Trial Obligations
AbstractWhat happens at the end of a clinical trial for an investigational neural implant? It may be surprising to learn how difficult it is to answer this question. While new trials are initiated with increasing regularity, relatively little consensus exists on how best to conduct them, and even less on how to ethically end them. The landscape of recent neural implant trials demonstrates wide variability of what happens to research participants after an neural implant trial ends. Some former research participants continue to receive support for their devices (e.g., battery and component replacements, software updates, etc...

In Vitro and In Silico Characterization of the Aggregation of Thrombi on Textured Ventricular Cannula
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Apr 28. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03504-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe unacceptably high stroke rate associated with HeartMate 3 ventricular assist device (VAD) without signs of adherent pump thrombosis is hypothesized to be the result of the emboli produced by the inflow cannula, that are ingested and ejected from the pump. This in vitro and numerical study aimed to emulate the surface features and supraphysiological shear of a ventricular cannula to provide insight into their effect on thrombogenesis. Human whole blood was perfused at calibrated flow rates in a microfluidic channel to achieve she...

Structures, aims and needs of early career scientists at the German Center for Mental Health
CONCLUSION: The DZPG will contribute to fostering ECS training programs for student and academic exchanges, collaborative research, and pooling of resources to acquire grants and scholarships. It will also support the establishment of hubs for ECS networks and promote the expansion of international competence of ECS in Germany.PMID:38668756 | DOI:10.1007/s00115-024-01631-7 (Source: Der Nervenarzt)

How smart was T. rex? Testing claims of exceptional cognition in dinosaurs and the application of neuron count estimates in palaeontological research
We present revised estimates of encephalization and telencephalic neuron counts in dinosaurs, which we derive from phylogenetically informed modeling and an amended dataset of endocranial measurements. For large-bodied theropods in particular, we recover significantly lower neuron counts than previously proposed. Furthermore, we review the suitability of neurological variables such as neuron numbers and relative brain size to predict cognitive complexity, metabolic rate and life history traits in dinosaurs, coming to the conclusion that they are flawed proxies for these biological phenomena. Instead of relying on such neur...
