Age Impacts Speech-in-Noise Recognition Differently for Nonnative and Native Listeners
CONCLUSIONS: This set of analyses extends the existing literature by examining interactions between aging and self-identified native English speaker status in several auditory domains in a cohort of adults spanning young adulthood through middle age. The finding that older nonnative English speakers in this age cohort may have greater-than-expected deficits on speech-in-noise perception may have clinical implications on how these individuals should be diagnosed and treated for hearing difficulties.PMID:38569080 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00470 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Tracking of serum lipid levels from childhood to adulthood: Systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Early-life lipid measurements are important for predicting adult levels. However, further research is needed to understand the tracking of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the stability of risk classification over time, which may further inform pediatric lipid screening and assessment strategies.PMID:38569384 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117482 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Gradients of Brain Organization: Smooth Sailing from Methods Development to User Community
AbstractMultimodal neuroimaging grants a powerful in vivo window into the structure and function of the human brain. Recent methodological and conceptual advances have enabled investigations of the interplay between large-scale spatial trends – orgradients– in brain structure and function, offering a framework to unify principles of brain organization across multiple scales. Strong community enthusiasm for these techniques has been instrumental in their widespread adoption and implementation to answer key questions in neuroscience. Following a brie f review of current literature on this framework, this perspective pape...

AAST grade of liver injury is not the single most important consideration in decision making for liver trauma
The liver is one of the most injured organs in both blunt and penetrating trauma. The aim of this study was to identify whether the AAST liver injury grade is predictive of need for intervention, risk of complications and mortality in our patient population, and whether this differs between blunt and penetrating-trauma mechanisms. Quantitative Neuromuscular Monitoring Permits Early Diagnosis of Abnormal Butyrylcholinestrase: Two Case Studies Demonstrating Prevention of Awareness from Premature Awakening
We present two patients with abnormal BChE gene variants. In the first case, quantitative monitoring was applied too late to prevent awareness, but allowed diagnosis and prevented admission to the intensive care unit. In the second case, monitoring was applied prior to NMB, which enabled early diagnosis and prevented premature awakening from anesthesia. These cases illustrate the importance of quantitative NMM, even in short cases and with short-acting depolarizing agents such as succinylcholine. The clinical implications of this report include a more consistent use of NMM to identify and manage patients with undiagnosed a...
