Men's involvement in maternal health in sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review of enablers and barriers
CONCLUSION: To improve men's involvement in maternal healthcare in SSA, there should be economic empowerment of both men and women, health education, and the provision of adequate infrastructure in healthcare facilities to accommodate men.PMID:38626505 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2024.103993 (Source: Midwifery)

Assessing quality of selection procedures: Lower bound of false positive rate as a function of inter-rater reliability
Br J Math Stat Psychol. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1111/bmsp.12343. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInter-rater reliability (IRR) is one of the commonly used tools for assessing the quality of ratings from multiple raters. However, applicant selection procedures based on ratings from multiple raters usually result in a binary outcome; the applicant is either selected or not. This final outcome is not considered in IRR, which instead focuses on the ratings of the individual subjects or objects. We outline the connection between the ratings' measurement model (used for IRR) and a binary classification framework. We develop a simple ...

Community engagement and power dynamics in conservation philanthropy grant making
Conserv Biol. 2024 Apr 15:e14272. doi: 10.1111/cobi.14272. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFunding decisions influence where, how, and by whom conservation is pursued globally. In the context of growing calls for more participatory, Indigenous-led, and socially just conservation, we undertook the first empirical investigation of how philanthropic foundations working in marine conservation globally engage communities in grant-making decisions. We paid particular attention to whether and how community engagement practices reinforce or disrupt existing power dynamics. We conducted semistructured remote interviews with 46 indivi...

Researchers need ‘open’ bibliographic databases, new declaration says
When universities are deciding whom to hire and promote, or grant organizations are selecting projects to fund, there’s a good chance they’re referencing more than just the application materials. Many organizations rely on databases that compile publication information including authors, affiliations, citations, and funding sources to create metrics meant to quantify a researcher’s productivity and the quality of their work. Some of the best known databases, such as the Web of Science and Scopus, are proprietary and offer pay-to-access data and services supporting these and other metrics, including university r...

Use of harm reduction strategies by individuals with a history of incarceration: A short report using baseline data collected from the STAMINA clinical trial
Due to the considerably heightened risk of overdose immediately following jail or prison release, expansion of harm reduction interventions for citizens returning to the community after an incarceration episode should be of utmost concern. However, there are no studies examining the adoption and use of harm reduction among this population. This short report examines the use of individual-level harm reduction strategies (HRS) among people who use drugs, comparing those who have lifetime histories of incarceration with those who do not. Similarities and Differences Between Pragmatic Trials and Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Trials
AbstractPragmatism in clinical trials is focused on increasing the generalizability of research findings for routine clinical care settings. Hybridism in clinical trials (i.e., assessing both clinical effectiveness and implementation success) is focused on speeding up the process by which evidence-based practices are developed and adopted into routine clinical care. Even though pragmatic trial methodologies and implementation science evolved from very different disciplines, Pragmatic Trials and Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Trials share many similar design features. In fact, these types of trials can easily be confla...

The HIV-1 reservoir landscape in persistent elite controllers and transient elite controllers
CONCLUSIONS These results suggest the need for, and can give guidance to, the design of future research to identify a distinct proviral landscape that may be associated with the persistent control of HIV-1 without ART.FUNDING Instituto de Salud Carlos III (FI17/00186, FI19/00083, MV20/00057, PI18/01532, PI19/01127 and PI22/01796), Gilead Fellowships (GLD22/00147). Neutralizing IFN-γ autoantibodies are rare and pathogenic in HLA-DRB1*15:02 or 16:02 individuals
CONCLUSION These findings suggest that nAIGAs are isolated and that their penetrance in HLA-DRB1*15:02 or 16:02 individuals is low, implying that they may be triggered by rare germline or somatic variants. In contrast, the risk of mycobacterial disease in patients with nAIGAs is high, confirming that these nAIGAs are the cause of EM disease.FUNDING The Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Rockefeller University, the St. Giles Foundation, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (R01AI095983 and U19AIN1625568), the National Center for Advancing Translati...

Comparisons between dxa and bioimpedance devices for appendicular lean mass and muscle quality in hispanic adults
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 15:1-24. doi: 10.1017/S000711452400076X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to compare single- and multi-frequency bioimpedance (BIA) devices against dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for appendicular lean mass (ALM) and muscle quality index (MQI) metrics in Hispanic adults. One-hundred thirty-one Hispanic adults (18-55 yrs.) participated in this study. ALM was measured with single-frequency (SFBIA), multi-frequency (MFBIA), and DXA. ALMTOTAL (left arm + right arm + left leg + right leg) and ALMARMS (left arm + right arm) were computed for all three devices. Handgrip streng...

Divalent Titanium via Reductive N-C Coupling of a TiIV Nitrido with π-Acids
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 15:e202404601. doi: 10.1002/anie.202404601. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe nitrido-ate complex [(PN)2Ti(N){μ2-K(OEt2)}]2 (1) reductively couples CO and isocyanides in the presence of DME or cryptand, to form rare, five-coordinate TiII complexes having a linear cumulene motif, [K(L)][(PN)2Ti(NCE)] (E = O, L = Kryptofix222, (2); E = NAd, L = 3 DME, (3); E = NtBu, L = 3 DME, (4); E = NAd, L = Kryptofix222, (5)). Oxidation of 2-5 with [Fc][OTf] afforded an isostructural TiIII center containing a neutral cumulene [(PN)2Ti(NCE)] (E = O, (6); E = NAd (7), NtBu (8)). Moreover, 1e- reduction of ...
