Robust superhydrophobic cotton fabric based on dual-sized silica particles with self-healing nature
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 11:131437. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImproving the durability of wear-resistant superhydrophobic surfaces is crucial for their practical use. To tackle this, research is now delving into self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces. In our study, we developed superhydrophobic cotton fabrics by embedding nano-silica particles, micro-silica powder, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a dipping method. This innovative design grants the SiO2/PDMS cotton fabric remarkable superhydrophobicity, reflected by a water contact angle of 155°. Moreover, the PDMS was st...

Running in the FAMILY: understanding and predicting the intergenerational transmission of mental illness
AbstractOver 50% of children with a parent with severe mental illness will develop mental illness by early adulthood. However, intergenerational transmission of risk for mental illness in one ’s children is insufficiently considered in clinical practice, nor is it sufficiently utilised into diagnostics and care for children of ill parents. This leads to delays in diagnosing young offspring and missed opportunities for protective actions and resilience strengthening. Prior twin, family, and adoption studies suggest that the aetiology of mental illness is governed by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors...

Point of care ultrasound and sub-xiphoid window reduce uncertainty in the management of potential dual-cavity injuries in patients with torso stab wounds
This paper reviews our experiences with the management of patients with torso stab wounds and potential injuries in both the chest and abdomen over the last decade. The aim of the project is to clarify our approach and provide an evidence base for clinical algorithms. We hypothesize that there is room for our clinical algorithms to be further refined in order to address the diverse, life threatening injuries that can result from stab wounds to the torso. BEERS2: RNA-Seq simulation through high fidelity in silico modeling
Brief Bioinform. 2024 Mar 27;25(3):bbae164. doi: 10.1093/bib/bbae164.ABSTRACTSimulation of RNA-seq reads is critical in the assessment, comparison, benchmarking and development of bioinformatics tools. Yet the field of RNA-seq simulators has progressed little in the last decade. To address this need we have developed BEERS2, which combines a flexible and highly configurable design with detailed simulation of the entire library preparation and sequencing pipeline. BEERS2 takes input transcripts (typically fully length messenger RNA transcripts with polyA tails) from either customizable input or from CAMPAREE simulated RNA s...

Cosmetic Skin Lightening: Contextualizing Biomedical and Ethical Issues
The skin lightening (SL) industry has a global reach and is projected to continue to grow over the coming decade. While SL treatments may be safely prescribed for treatment of some dermatologic conditions, many over-the-counter SL products contain ingredients that can cause harm to the skin and other organ systems. Given a lack of transparent information to patients and the historical colorist foundation that contextualizes a component of the cosmetic SL industry, dermatologists need to navigate biomedical and ethical concerns when explaining SL products to patients. Crafty mimicry grants nuclear pore entry to HIV
Cell Host Microbe. 2024 Apr 10;32(4):441-442. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2024.03.004.ABSTRACTThe size of the nuclear pore should, in principle, prevent HIV-1 entry. However, HIV-1 capsid is able to gain nuclear pore entry. In a recent issue of Nature, Fu et al. and Dickson et al. demonstrate that the HIV-1 capsid mimics the nuclear transport protein karyopherins to access host nuclei.PMID:38604120 | DOI:10.1016/j.chom.2024.03.004 (Source: Cell Host and Microbe)
