The Current Status of Organ Recovery Surgeon Remuneration in the United States
AbstractPurpose of ReviewRemuneration for surgeons who procure organs for transplantation from deceased donors is highly variable throughout the country and not standardized by the Centers for Medicare& Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS does not grant formal relative value units (RVUs) for organ recoveries but some transplant centers award “non-standardized” RVUs in an ad hoc fashion.Recent FindingsA REDCap survey was sent out by the Business Practice Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons to understand the practices of individual transplant centers regarding payment for transplant-related procedures. ...

NSF tests ways to improve research security without disrupting peer review
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is spending $571 million to build the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile so astronomers can survey the sky in unprecedented detail for evidence of dark matter and energy. It’s part of the agency’s mission to fund basic research. But when the telescope sees first light next year, its 3.2-gigapixel camera will also see things the U.S. government might not want disclosed, including spy satellites and other military hardware that could pose a threat to the United States. So do the data it collects need to be restricted in some way? In response to pressure from Congress...

Risk factors associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes in Jamaica: a cross-sectional study of national surveillance data
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this cross-sectional analysis indicate that confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Jamaica were more likely to be female and younger individuals, whereas COVID-19 deaths occurred more frequently in males and older individuals. There is increased risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes beginning at age 40, with males disproportionately affected. COVID-19 death also varied by geographic region. This evidence could be useful to other countries with similar settings and to policymakers charged with managing outbreaks and health.PMID:38576843 | PMC:PMC10993815 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2024.36 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Common and divergent molecular mechanisms of fasting and ketogenic diets
Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Feb;35(2):125-141. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2023.10.001. Epub 2023 Oct 28.ABSTRACTIntermittent short-term fasting (ISTF) and ketogenic diets (KDs) exert overlapping but not identical effects on cell metabolism, function, and resilience. Whereas health benefits of KD are largely mediated by the ketone bodies (KBs), ISTF engages additional adaptive physiological responses. KDs act mainly through inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs), reduction of oxidative stress, improvement of mitochondria efficiency, and control of inflammation. Mechanisms of action of ISTF include stimulation of autophagy, in...

Characteristics of strong midwifery leaders and enablers of strong midwifery leadership: An international appreciative inquiry
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study contributes to understandings of trait, behavioural, situational, transformational and servant leadership theory in the context of midwifery. Investing in the development of strong midwifery leadership is essential as it has the potential to elevate the profession and improve perinatal outcomes worldwide. Findings may inform the development of both existing and new leadership models, frameworks, and validated measurement tools.PMID:38579551 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2024.103982 (Source: Midwifery)
