Systematic Review of the roles of Inositol and Vitamin D in improving fertility among patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Clin Exp Reprod Med. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.5653/cerm.2023.06485. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder among reproductive-age women. As a leading cause of anovulatory infertility, it complicates fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization. The widely accepted 2003 Rotterdam diagnostic criteria for PCOS include sub-phenotypes based on variations in androgen excess, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology. In this systematic review, we examined the impacts of inositol and vitamin D on fertility in PCOS. Adhering to the Preferred ...

Metformin Inhibits Zika Virus Infection in Trophoblast Cell Line
In this study, we evaluated metformin treatment during ZIKV infection in vitro in a JEG3-permissive trophoblast cell line. Our results demonstrate that metformin affects viral replication and protein synthesis and reverses cytoskeletal changes promoted by ZIKV infection. In addition, it reduces lipid droplet formation, which is associated with lipogenic activation of infection. Taken together, our results indicate that metformin has potential as an antiviral agent against ZIKV infection in vitro in trophoblast cells.PMID:38592489 | DOI:10.1007/s00284-024-03651-7 (Source: Current Microbiology)

The Impact of Pre-Stroke Metformin Use on Clinical Outcomes after Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Stroke stands as one of the most devastating medical conditions and societal burdens, ranking as the third-leading cause of both death and disability on a global scale1. Diabetes mellitus, specifically type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is not just a prevalent medical condition but also a known risk factor for stroke, contributing to both its occurrence and recurrence2-5. The complexities tied to diabetes make it a focal point of investigation, especially given that hyperglycemia upon admission has been correlated with unfavorable outcomes post-stroke2, 6-8. Metformin Mitigates Adipogenesis of Fibro-adipogenic Progenitors After Rotator Cuff Tears Via Activating mTOR/ULK1 Mediated Autophagy
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00034.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMuscular fatty infiltration is a common issue after rotator cuff tears (RCT) which impairs shoulder function. Females suffer higher prevalence and more severe degree of muscular fatty infiltration after RCT when compared to males, with the underlying mechanisms remaining unclear. Fibro/adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) are the primary source of muscular fatty infiltration following RCT. Our findings disclose that gender-specific disparities in muscular fatty infiltration are linked to mTOR/ULK1-mediated autophagy of FAPs. Decr...

Effects of Zinc Combined with Metformin on Zinc Homeostasis, Blood-Epididymal Barrier, and Epididymal Absorption in Male Diabetic Mice
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04171-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes increases the likelihood of germ cell damage, hypogonadism, and male infertility. Diabetes leads to lower zinc (Zn) levels, an important micronutrient for maintaining male fertility, and zinc deficiency can lead to decreased male fertility through multiple mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of combined metformin and zinc administration on epididymis in diabetic mice; 10 of 50 male mice were randomly selected as the control group (group C), and the remaining 40 mice were randomly divided into...
