Safety vs price in the generic drug market: metformin
CONCLUSIONS: Recalls of metformin ER medications were effective in lowering NDMA levels below the FDA threshold; however, some samples of generic metformin still contained carcinogens even after FDA-announced recalls. The absence of any correlation with price indicates that potentially safer products are available on the market for the same price as poorer-quality products.PMID:38603530 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2024.89450 (Source: The American Journal of Managed Care)

Efficacy of combinational treatment versus nicotinamide monotherapy in the prevention of ultraviolet radiation-induced skin cancer
CONCLUSION: NAM-PG was as effective in delaying UVR-induced tumour onset as NAM-mono. The reduction in 6-4PP lesions may indicate that the mechanism of NAM-PG is better suited for photoprotection than NAM-mono. NAM-mono was superior to NAM-Met, indicating a dose-dependency of NAM's photoprotection. These results highlight a potential for combining photoprotective compounds to enhance photoprotection.PMID:38599196 | DOI:10.1159/000538445 (Source: Cancer Control)

Associations Among Diabetes Medication Use, Serum Magnesium, and Insulin Resistance in a Cohort of Older Puerto Rican Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes medication, especially metformin, was associated with elevated odds of hypomagnesemia, which may weaken the association between metformin and lowering of HOMA-IR. The causal inference needs to be confirmed in further studies.PMID:38599521 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.04.005 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Metformin ameliorates PM2.5-induced functional impairment of placental trophoblasts by inhibiting ferroptosis
CONCLUSION: PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy causes adverse pregnancy outcomes and ferroptosis and functional impairment of placental trophoblasts in mice, and metformin can effectively alleviate PM2.5-induced trophoblast impairment.PMID:38597434 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2024.03.04 (Source: Journal of Southern Medical University)

Systematic Review of the roles of Inositol and Vitamin D in improving fertility among patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Clin Exp Reprod Med. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.5653/cerm.2023.06485. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder among reproductive-age women. As a leading cause of anovulatory infertility, it complicates fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization. The widely accepted 2003 Rotterdam diagnostic criteria for PCOS include sub-phenotypes based on variations in androgen excess, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology. In this systematic review, we examined the impacts of inositol and vitamin D on fertility in PCOS. Adhering to the Preferred ...
