Comparison of DNA Extraction Methods for Processed Foods Containing Soybean or Maize
In this study, the equivalence testing of the techniques employed for DNA extraction from processed foods containing soybean or corn was conducted. In this study, the equivalence testing of the techniques employed for DNA extraction from processed foods containing soybean or maize was conducted. The silica membrane-based DNA extraction kits, GM quicker 4 and DNeasy Plant Maxi Kit (Maxi Kit), as an existing method were compared. GM quicker 4 was considered to be equivalent to or better than Maxi Kit.PMID:38658344 | DOI:10.3358/shokueishi.65.25 (Source: Shokuhin eiseigaku zasshi. Journal of the Food Hygienic Society of Japan)

A Study on the Scientific Reliability of Notification Data in the Foods with Function Claims
Shokuhin Eiseigaku Zasshi. 2024;65(2):31-39. doi: 10.3358/shokueishi.65.31.ABSTRACTWe conducted a comprehensive survey of Foods with Function Claims (FFC) submitted from April to August 2022 to examine the scientific reliability of the systematic review (SR), which is the basis for functional claims. The results of the review of 611 functional claims for 398 products showed that there were 121 functionally active substances and 87 health claims (Hc) that were labeled, with some functionally active substances having multiple functions. SRs, meta-analyses, and clinical studies were submitted as the basis of functionality for...

Butylated hydroxyanisole induces vascular endothelial injury via TFEB-mediated degradation of GPX4 and FTH1
In conclusion, BHA degrades GPX4, xCT, and FTH1 through activation of the TFEB-mediated lysosomal pathway and promotes ferroptosis, ultimately leading to vascular endothelial cell injury.PMID:38657941 | DOI:10.1016/j.fct.2024.114682 (Source: Food and Chemical Toxicology)

Prenatal acetaminophen exposure and the developing ovary: time, dose, and course consequences for fetal mice
In this study, we established a PAcE Kunming mouse model at different time (middle pregnancy and third trimester), doses (low, middle, high) and courses (single or multi-) to systematically investigate their effects on fetal ovarian development. The findings indicated PAcE affected ovarian development, reduced fetal ovarian oocyte number and inhibited cell proliferation. A reduction in mRNA expression was observed for genes associated with oocyte markers (NOBOX and Figlα), follicular development markers (BMP15 and GDF9), and pre-granulosa cell steroid synthase (SF1 and StAR). Notably, exposure in middle pregnancy, high do...

Molecular assessment of oat head blight fungus, including a new genus and species in a family of Nectriaceae
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Apr 21;417:110715. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHead blight (HB) of oat (Avena sativa) has caused significant production losses in oats growing areas of western China. A total of 314 isolates, associated with HB were collected from the major oat cultivating areas of Gansu, Qinghai, and Yunnan Provinces in western China. Based on morphological characters, the isolates were initially classified into three genera, as differentiation to species was a bit difficult. Taxonomic analysis of these isolates based on muti-gene phylogenetic analyses (ITS, TEF1, TUB2, ...

Development of Antifungal Packaging From Low ‐Density Polyethylene With Essential Oil of Oregano and Potassium Sorbate
Antifungal low-density polyethylene films were formulated with oregano essential oil. Oregano essential oil modifies the physical properties of low-density polyethylene films. Potassium sorbate influences the barrier properties of low-density polyethylene films. ABSTRACTAntimicrobial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films were developed by adding 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.5% and 5.0% (w/w) of Mexican oregano essential oil (OEO) or potassium sorbate (PS) as a positive antifungal control to inhibit the growth ofPenicillium expansum,Penicillium citrinum andAspergillus niger in  vitro. Three methods of adding OEO in LDPE were evaluate...

Recent Progress in Modified Atmosphere Packaging and Biopolymeric Films and Coatings for Fresh Strawberry Shelf ‐Life Extension
Fresh strawberries (FS) have a limited shelf life. Modified atmosphere packaging has been used to extend FS' shelf life. Biopolymeric films and coatings are technologies used to extent FS' shelf life. Active molecules have been used to manufacture films and coatings. ABSTRACTStrawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a valuable crop cultivated worldwide. This fruit is mainly consumed fresh and is an important source of vitamin C, fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids. However, fresh strawberries (FS) have a limited shelf life. Conventionally, the shelf life of FS has been extended using refrigeration coupled with modified atmosph...

Urban food governance without local food: missing links between Czech post-socialist cities and urban food alternatives
AbstractFood is becoming an increasingly important issue in the urban context. Urban food policies are a new phenomenon in Czechia, where urban food alternatives to the current food regime are promoted by food movements or take the form of traditional self-provisioning. This paper examines how urban food governance in Prague and Brno is constituted based on the municipalities ’ relations with actors engaged in urban food alternatives. We argue that prioritizing aspects of local food system transformation compliant with the status quo is non-systemic and implies a fragmentation of urban food alternatives based on differen...
