Effects of a diverse prebiotic fibre supplement on HbA1c, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory biomarkers in pre-diabetes: a pilot placebo-controlled randomised clinical trial
In this study, we evaluated the effect of using a diverse prebiotic fibre supplement on glycaemic, lipid, and inflammatory biomarkers in patients with pre-diabetes. Sixty-six patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes (yet not receiving glucose-lowering medications) were randomised into treatment (n = 33) and placebo (n = 33) interventions. Participants in the treatment arm consumed 20g per day of a diverse prebiotic fibre supplement and participants in the placebo arm consumed 2g per day of cellulose for 24 weeks. A total of 51 and 48 participants completed the week 16 and week 24 visits, respectively. The intervention was well...

GSE264691 single-cell RNA-seq of cardiac tissue from offsprings of dams with different fibre intake levels
Contributors : Malathi I Dona ; Hamdi Jama ; Francine MarquesSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusWe proposed that the maternal intake of fibre could influence the epigenetic conditions in the womb, consequently altering the cardiac characteristics of the offspring. Additionally, we speculated that maternal fibre intake might lead to significant changes in cardiac gene expression in the offspring by promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). To examine the impact of maternal high fibre intake on the cellular composition of the heart, we conducted single-...

Production, modification and degradation of fructans and fructooligosacharides by enzymes originated from plants
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 20:131668. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131668. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-starch polysaccharides exhibit numerous beneficial health effects but compounds belonging to FODMAP (Fermentable Oligo- Di- and Monosaccharides and Polyols) has been recently connected to several gastrointestinal disorders. This review presents integrated literature data on the occurrence and types of fructans and fructooligosaccharids (classified as FODMAPs) as well as their degrading enzymes present in plants. Plants from the family Asteraceae and many monocotyledones, including families Poaceae and Liliaceae, ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1608: Effects of Adjuvant Exercise and Nutrition Therapy on Muscle Fibre Biomechanics in Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients
Oliver Friedrich Patients with aggressive cancer, e.g., gastrointestinal cancer, are prone (≥50% chance) to developing cancer cachexia (CC). Little is known about the effects of CC on the biomechanical function of muscle. A promising prevention strategy was found in the form of a multi-modal therapy combining mild resistance exercise (e.g., whole-body electro-myostimulation, WB-EMS) and a protein-rich diet. In a previous study of ours, this was effective in counteracting the loss of muscle mass, yet a systematic and comprehensive assessment of active and passive single muscle fibre functions was so far abs...

A systematic review of observational studies exploring the relationship between health and non-weight-centric eating behaviours
This study aimed to systematically evaluate 'health-centric' eating behaviour reflective of weight-neutral approaches, and their relationship with health (physical and mental) and health promoting behaviours. A systematic search was performed, identifying observational studies with adult populations, ≥1 physical/mental health outcome(s), and ≥1 validated measure(s) of health-centric eating behaviour. Study design, sample characteristics and outcomes were extracted and characterised into four domains. Our search identified 8281 records, with 86 studies, 75 unique datasets, and 78 unique exposures including 94,710 indivi...

Preconception diet in adolescence and its association with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preterm birth. Results from The HUNT study
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 18:1-22. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000746. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur aim was to estimate associations of adolescent dietary patterns and meal habits with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and preterm birth. We used data from a prospective cohort study (Norwegian Young-HUNT1) where dietary information was collected during adolescence and pregnancy outcomes were obtained through record linkage to the Norwegian national birth registry. The outcomes were HDP, hypertension, preeclampsia/ eclampsia, and preterm birth in the first pregnancy and in any pregnancy. Diet was self-reported from valida...

Investigation of the growth of Listeria in plant-based beverages
The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether the content of sugar, protein, fat, or fibre in commercially available and specially formulated plant-based beverages (oat, soya and pea) influences the growth rates of Listeria. Beverages were inoculated with a strain cocktail of Listeria (approximately 1 × 103 CFU/mL), and the data demonstrated that Listeria could proliferate in all tested beverages. Moreover, varying concentrations of naturally occurring or added sugar (0-3.3%), protein (3.3-5%), fat (1.1-3.5%) and added fibre (0-1.5%) did not have a statistically significant (p > 0.05) impact on the growth ...

Highlights from the literature
Fruit juice – good for you? Child or adult, drinking fruit juice must be a great way of contributing to your five-a-day of fruits and vegetables. There is a lot of free sugar in 100% fruit juice and no fibre. Do these high sugar drinks contribute to obesity? Nguyen M et al (JAMA Pediatr 2024;178:237–246) have completed a systematic review focussing on the evidence that fruit juice has an impact on weight gain and BMI by examining MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases searching up to 18 May 2023. They looked for prospective cohort studies of at least 6 months and randomised clinical trials (RCTs) of at least 2...

Diaphragm weakness in late-onset Pompe disease: A complex interplay between lower motor neuron and muscle fibre degeneration
Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) patients may still need ventilation support at some point of their disease course, despite regular recombinant human alglucosidase alfa treatment. This suggest that other pathophysiological mechanisms than muscle fibre lesion can contribute to the respiratory failure process. We investigate through neurophysiology whether spinal phrenic motor neuron dysfunction could contribute to diaphragm weakness in LOPD patients. (Source: Journal of the Neurological Sciences)
