Contribution of baby food pouches and other commercial infant foods to the diets of infants: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Baby food pouches make relatively small contributions to energy intake in infants, but are important sources of carbohydrate, fiber, and vitamins A, C and B6. Almost half of the total sugars consumed from complementary foods is provided by these pouches.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (registration number: ACTRN12620000459921; website: http://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?id=379436) for the FFNZ study.PMID:38431120 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.02.030 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Results from omic approaches in rat or mouse models exposed to inhaled crystalline silica: a systematic review
Crystalline silica (cSiO2) is a mineral found in rocks; workers from the construction or denim industries are particularly exposed to cSiO2 through inhalation. cSiO2 inhalation increases the risk of silicosis and... (Source: Particle and Fibre Toxicology)

Alterations in epidermal stem cells within the pilosebaceous unit in atrophic acne scars
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that as inflammatory acne lesions progress, inflammation gradually infiltrates the pilosebaceous unit and affects the resident stem cells. This disruption impedes the normal regeneration of the interfollicular epidermis and adnexal structures, resulting in atrophic acne scars.PMID:38419202 | DOI:10.1111/ajd.14224 (Source: The Australasian Journal of Dermatology)

Application of near infra-red laser light increases current threshold in optic nerve consistent with increased Na < sup > + < /sup > -dependent transport
Pflugers Arch. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1007/s00424-024-02932-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIncreases in the current threshold occur in optic nerve axons with the application of infra-red laser light, whose mechanism is only partly understood. In isolated rat optic nerve, laser light was applied near the site of electrical stimulation, via a flexible fibre optic. Paired applications of light produced increases in threshold that were reduced on the second application, the response recovering with increasing delays, with a time constant of 24 s. 3-min duration single applications of laser light gave rise to a rapid increase i...

Zinc oxide nanoparticles exacerbate skin epithelial cell damage by upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and exosome secretion in M1 macrophages following UVB irradiation-induced skin injury
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) are common materials used in skin-related cosmetics and sunscreen products due to their whitening and strong UV light absorption properties. Although the protective effects of... (Source: Particle and Fibre Toxicology)

Structure and absolute configuration of natural fungal product beauveriolide I, isolated from Cordyceps javanica, determined by 3D electron diffraction
In this study, the absolute structure of beauveriolide I was determined by 3D electron diffraction. The cyclodepsipeptide crystallizes in the space group I2 with lattice parameters a = 40.2744 (4), b = 5.0976 (5), c = 27.698 (4) Å and β = 105.729 (6)°. After dynamical refinement, its absolute structure was determined by comparing the R factors and calculating the z-scores of the two possible enantiomorphs of beauveriolide I.PMID:38411548 | DOI:10.1107/S2053229624001359 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Diagnostic utility of point-of-care ultrasound and optical coherence tomography for papilloedema in children: a prospective pilot study
CONCLUSION: Both OCT and POCUS are potentially useful tools to help diagnose papilloedema in children. Larger studies are needed to further define the role and accuracy of POCUS and OCT in assessing papilloedema in children.PMID:38413191 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324552 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

The impact of measurement technique and sampling on estimates of skeletal muscle fibre architecture
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2024 Feb 26. doi: 10.1002/ar.25415. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkeletal muscle fibre architecture provides important insights into performance of vertebrate locomotor and feeding behaviours. Chemical digestion and in situ sectioning of muscle bellies along their lengths to expose fibres, fibre orientation and intramuscular tendon, are two classical methods for estimating architectural variables such as fibre length (Lf ) and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). It has recently been proposed that Lf estimates are systematically shorter and hence less accurate using in situ sectioning. Here we ad...
