Gut microbiota plays a significant role in gout
J Med Microbiol. 2024 Apr;73(4). doi: 10.1099/jmm.0.001824.ABSTRACTWith the development of social economy, the incidence of gout is increasing, which is closely related to people's increasingly rich diet. Eating a diet high in purine, fat, sugar and low-fibre for a long time further aggravates gout by affecting uric acid metabolism. The renal metabolism mechanism of uric acid has been thoroughly studied. To find a new treatment method for gout, increasing studies have recently been conducted on the mechanism of intestinal excretion, metabolism and absorption of uric acid. The most important research is the relationship bet...

How do sleepwear and bedding fibre types affect sleep quality: A systematic review
J Sleep Res. 2024 Apr 16:e14217. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14217. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleepwear and bedding materials can affect sleep quality by influencing the skin and body temperature and thermal comfort. This review systematically evaluates the impact of sleepwear or bedding of different fibre types on sleep quality. A systematic search was conducted in six data bases plus Google Scholar and manual searches. Original articles that compared human sleep quality between at least two fibre types of bedding or sleepwear were included, resulting in nine eligible articles included in the review. The fibre types included cot...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2561: 3D DAS VSP for Coal Seam Exploration: A Case Study from Queensland, Australia
This study trialled effective strategies for deploying cables into boreholes and demonstrated how this technology could be incorporated into the standard coal exploration process. The final processing results produced a high-resolution 3D seismic cube where the coal seams below the basalt cover are clearly identifiable around the boreholes. Permanent installation of the fibre-optic cables into a set of boreholes provides immediate benefits of 3D seismic imaging and can create additional value in utilising these sensors for further discrete or continuous subsurface measurements, including stability monitoring of underground...

Determining a musculoskeletal system's pre-stretched state using continuum-mechanical forward modelling and joint range optimization
Biomech Model Mechanobiol. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1007/s10237-024-01821-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe subject-specific range of motion (RoM) of a musculoskeletal joint system is balanced by pre-tension levels of individual muscles, which affects their contraction capability. Such an inherent pre-tension or pre-stretch of muscles is not measureable with in vivo experiments. Using a 3D continuum mechanical forward simulation approach for motion analysis of the musculoskeletal system of the forearm with 3 flexor and 2 extensor muscles, we developed an optimization process to determine the muscle fibre pre-stretches for a...

Social history and glaucoma progression: the effect of body mass index, tobacco and alcohol consumption on the rates of structural change in patients with glaucoma
CONCLUSIONS: In a large clinical population with glaucoma, habits of tobacco and alcohol consumption showed no significant effect on the rates of RNFL change. Higher BMI was significantly associated with slower rates of RNFL loss.PMID:38621956 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323186 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Resistance is not futile: a systematic review of the benefits, mechanisms and safety of resistance training in people with heart failure
AbstractExercise offers many physical and health benefits to people with heart failure (CHF), but aerobic training (AT) predominates published literature. Resistance training (RT) provides additional and complementary health benefits to AT in people with CHF; we aimed to elucidate specific health benefits accrued, the mechanism of effect and safety of RT. We conducted a systematic search for RT randomised, controlled trials in people with CHF, up until August 30, 2023. RT offers several benefits including improved physical function (peak VO2 and 6MWD), quality of life, cardiac systolic and diastolic function, endothelial b...
