Horizontal Gaze Palsy and Progressive Scoliosis With ROBO 3 Mutations in Patients From Cape Verde
We describe 2 cases of HGPPS which are the first documented in patients of African ancestry from an isolated population in Cape Verde. They demonstrated typical findings on neuro-ophthalmic examination and brain magnetic resonance imaging. One patient had novel heterozymous mutations of the ROB0 3 gene. Ethnic differences in coeliac disease autoimmunity in childhood: the Generation R Study
Conclusions Ethnic differences in children with CDA are present in childhood. Socioeconomic position, daycare attendance and CMV seropositivity partly explained these differences, which may serve as targets for prevention strategies for CDA. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

KSHV-associated and EBV-associated Germinotropic Lymphoproliferative Disorder: New Findings and Review of the Literature
We report 2 cases of Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV)—and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) associated germinotropic lymphoproliferative disorder. Both cases arose in patients from regions endemic for KSHV, Cape Verde, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, presenting as localized lymphadenopathy. The affected lymph nodes showed colonization of the follicles by clusters of large atypical plasmablasts, but also showed regressive changes with vascular proliferation and interfollicular plasmacytosis, both reminiscent of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) positive multicentric Castleman disease. The atypical plasmablasts sh...

Perspectives on Hypertension in the New England Cape Verdean Community
This study characterizes patient understanding of hypertension and its management in a Cape Verdean immigrant community. We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with Cape Verdean Creole-speaking adults about their beliefs and behaviors regarding hypertension. Fourteen women and six men ages 35 –87 were interviewed. The majority of the participants believed hypertension is symptomatic, with headache being the most common symptom. Many reported taking anti-hypertensive medication, though some took medication only when they felt symptoms. The majority were unfamiliar with a normal blood pr essure reading. Most believed h...

Molecules, Vol. 22, Pages 347: Is Gamma Radiation Suitable to Preserve Phenolic Compounds and to Decontaminate Mycotoxins in Aromatic Plants? A Case-Study with Aloysia citrodora Paláu
This study aimed to determine the effect of gamma radiation on the preservation of phenolic compounds and on decontamination of dry herbs in terms of ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), using Aloysia citrodora Pal áu as a case study. For this purpose, artificially contaminated dry leaves were submitted to gamma radiation at different doses (1, 5, and 10 kGy; at dose rate of 1.7 kGy/h). Phenolic compounds were analysed by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS and mycotoxin levels were determined by HPLC-fluorescence. Eleven phenol ic compounds were identified in the samples and despite the apparent degradation of some compounds (namely ...

Population genetic structure of Helicobacter pylori strains from Portuguese ‐speaking countries
ConclusionsH. pylori is a useful marker even for relative recent human migration events and may become rapidly differentiated from founder populations. H. pylori from Portuguese‐speaking countries assigned to hpEurope appears to be a hybrid population resulting from the admixture of AE1, AE2 and ancestral hpAfrica1. (Source: Helicobacter)

The problem of secondary education completion: The case study of Cape Verde, a small island developing state
Publication date: March 2017 Source:International Journal of Educational Development, Volume 53 Author(s): Emily Irene Longenecker, Anthony Justin Barnum Like many small island developing states, Cape Verde faces a challenge with secondary school completion. The lack of global development goals for secondary education results in the lack of government policies to promote secondary education, which may in effect be partially responsible for the drop in primary school completion The purpose of this paper is to identify the student populations who leave secondary school prior to completion based on Cape Verde’s Ministry...

IJERPH, Vol. 13, Pages 1155: Determinants, Health Problems, and Food Insecurity in Urban Areas of the Largest City in Cape Verde
This study aims to understand the perceptions for high blood pressure, obesity, and alcoholism, describing some interactions of these dimensions in the problem of food security in the city of Praia. A qualitative study was carried out under the framework of the research project “UPHI-STAT: Urban Planning and Health Inequalities—moving from macro to micro statistics”. Ten focus groups were conducted in three urban areas with distinct characteristics in the city of Praia, with a total of 48 participants. Participants reported frequent consumption of foods with poor nut ritional quality, understanding the potential dang...

Effects of gamma radiation on cork wastewater: Antioxidant activity and toxicity.
Abstract A comprehensive assessment of the toxicity and antioxidant activity of cork boiling wastewater and the effects of gamma radiation on these parameters was performed. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using different methodologies as DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power and inhibition of β-carotene bleaching. The results have shown that gamma radiation can induce an increase on the antioxidant activity of cork boiling wastewater. Toxicity tests were performed to access the potential added value of the irradiated wastewaters and/or minimization of the impact for discharge in the environ...

Ethnic Disparities in Dental Caries among Six-Year-Old Children in the Netherlands
The aim of this study was to investigate potential differences in caries prevalence of children from ethnic minority groups compared to native Dutch children and the influence of socio-economic status (SES) and parent-reported oral health behaviour on this association. The study had a cross-sectional design, embedded in a population-based prospective multi-ethnic cohort study. 4,306 children with information on caries experience, belonging to 7 different ethnic groups, participated in this study. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) index was assessed at the age of 6 and categorized in two ways for analysis: child...

Genome-wide analyses of HTLV-1aD strains from Cape Verde, Africa.
Abstract We characterised and reported the first full-length genomes of Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 subgroup HTLV-1aD (CV21 and CV79). This subgroup is one of the major determinants of HTLV-1 infections in North and West Africa, and recombinant strains involving this subgroup have been recently demonstrated. The CV21 and CV79 strains from Cape Verde/Africa were characterised as pure HTLV-1aD genomes, comparative analyses including HTLV-1 subtypes and subgroups revealed HTLV-1aD signatures in the envelope, pol, and pX regions. These genomes provide original information that will contribute to fur...
