Surveillance of Aedes aegypti populations in the city of Praia, Cape Verde: Zika virus infection, insecticide resistance and genetic diversity
Aedes spp. are responsible for the transmission of many arboviruses, which contribute to rising human morbidity and mortality worldwide. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a main vector for chikungunya, dengue and yel... (Source: Parasites and Vectors)

Genes, Vol. 11, Pages 877: Bats Out of Africa: Disentangling the Systematic Position and Biogeography of Bats in Cabo Verde
celos Cabo Verde Archipelago presents one of the largest knowledge gaps in the distribution and taxonomy of bats in the world. Old works indicated that there are five species classified as European taxa. We have conducted an integrative taxonomy to revise the systematic position and distribution of Cabo Verdean bats with molecular, morphological, and ecological data, to test their native or exotic origin, and infer possible colonization patterns based on fieldwork and museum samples. Results showed that Cabo Verde Hypsugo is closely related to those from the Canary Islands, in which the taxonomic status is under debate...

Computation of Dolphins' Sound ASPL While Foraging.
Authors: Petropoulos V, Podiadis V, Verriopoulos G Abstract Scheduled scientific surveys are a valuable asset in beginning to understand the behavior and vocalization of free-ranging cetaceans. The fortuity of a nonscheduled survey has proven to be beneficial as well. In October 2003 a team of biologist oceanographers began a trip aboard a 44.29 feet catamaran sailing boat from Piraeus Greece to Cape Verde Archipelago intending to observe free-ranging cetaceans. Acoustic recordings were conducted using a towed stereophonic hydrophone array consisted of two Benthos AQ4 type hydrophones. Photographs were ta...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 3629: Occupational Stress and Employees Complete Mental Health: A Cross-Cultural Empirical Study
uebner Given the shortcomings of previous research on occupational stress and mental health (e.g., predominantly in Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic (WEIRD) societies, based on the traditional mental health model and a lack of comparative studies), this study aimed to (a) examine the relationship between occupational stress and complete mental health among employees in Cabo Verde and China, and also explored the mediation and moderation roles of burnout and optimism in accounting for the empirical link. Mental health was defined as comprised of two distinguishable factors: positive and negative me...

The V410L knockdown resistance mutation occurs in island and continental populations of < i > Aedes aegypti < /i > in West and Central Africa
In this study, the recently described V410Lkdr mutation is reported for the first time in old worldAe.aegypti populations, namely from Angola and Madeira island. Two additionalkdr mutations, V1016I and F1534C, are also reported for the first time in populations from Angola and Cape Verde. Significant associations with the resistance phenotype were found for both V410L and V1016I individually as well as for tri-locus genotypes in the Angolan population. However, no association was found in Madeira island, probably due to the presence of a complex pattern of multiple insecticide resistance mechanisms in the localAe.aegypti p...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 1291: Abundance and Updated Distribution of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Cabo Verde Archipelago: A Neglected Threat to Public Health
Conclusion: These results suggest that if no vector control measures are considered to be in place, the risk of new arboviral outbreaks in Cabo Verde is high. The vector control strategy adopted must include measures of public health directed to domestic water storage and management. Genotypic resistance profiles of HIV-2-infected patients from Cape Verde failing first-line antiretroviral therapy
The pol gene from HIV-2-infected patients from Cape Verde experiencing virologic failure was sequenced and drug resistance mutations were determined. Most patients were taking a first-line regimen of zidovudine (AZT), lamivudine (3TC) and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r). Resistance mutations were found in most patients (11/17; 64.7%) especially I82F (4/7; 57.1%) and M184V (10/17; 58.8%). Resistance to all reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors was found in 58.8% (10/17) of the patients. Integrase inhibitors are warranted to treat these patients. (Source: AIDS)
