A Possible Link Between Pyriproxyfen and Microcephaly
This study was based upon a small number of cases and ultrasound detection rather than births. Seven cases of microcephaly were reported above background, but only one of them was a birth; the others were detected by ultrasound. The high rate of ultrasound detection is not consistent with observations by ultrasound of microcephaly in other countries, including Colombia. We use the model for French Polynesia as a reference model for comparison with other data in order to clarify which data is or is not consistent with that model. We note that this rate is about 100 times larger than the minimum reported background rate for ...

Ancestry and dental development: A geographic and genetic perspective
ConclusionBased on a geographic and genetic perspective, differences in dental development exist in a population of heterogeneous ancestry and should be considered when describing the physiological growth in children. (Source: American Journal of Physical Anthropology)

Learning points from a case of severe amoebic colitis.
Authors: Petridou C, Al-Badri A, Dua A, Dryden M, Saeed K Abstract A case of amoebic colitis and liver abscess is described in a previously fit 59-year old man who had been given the incorrect diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. His symptoms were so severe that a colectomy was being considered. The patient had a significant travel history including trips to Morocco, the Gambia and Cape Verde, putting him at risk of acquiring amoebic disease. However, this history was not ascertained until much later on in the disease process. The case highlighted crucial learning points including the importance of taking a li...

GSE102363 Transcriptome profiling of ozone responses of Arabidopsis thaliana natural accessions Col-0 and Cvi-0, and a near-isogenig line Col-S with Cvi-0's ozone sensitivity introgressed into Col-0
Contributors : Lauri Vaahtera ; Enjun Xu ; Mikael Brosch éSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Arabidopsis thalianaMany Arabidopsis thaliana accession show sensitvity to the air pollutant ozone, including the accession Cvi-0 from the Cape Verde Islands. To understand and assist in genetic mapping of loci causing the ozone sensitvity of Cvi-0, transcript profiling was performed in Cvi-0, the tolerant Col-0, and a near isogenic line (Col-S) where ozone sensitivity was introgressesed from Cvi-0 to Col-0 through eight rounds of backcrossing. Parallel Trajectories of Genetic and Linguistic Admixture in a Genetically Admixed Creole Population.
Abstract Joint analyses of genes and languages, both of which are transmitted in populations by descent with modification-genes vertically by Mendel's laws, language via combinations of vertical, oblique, and horizontal processes [1-4]-provide an informative approach for human evolutionary studies [5-10]. Although gene-language analyses have employed extensive data on individual genetic variation [11-23], their linguistic data have not considered corresponding long-recognized [24] variability in individual speech patterns, or idiolects. Genetically admixed populations that speak creole languages show high ...

Gamma irradiation effects on ochratoxin A: Degradation, cytotoxicity and application in food
Publication date: 1 February 2018 Source:Food Chemistry, Volume 240 Author(s): Thalita Calado, María Luisa Fernández-Cruz, Sandra Cabo Verde, Armando Venâncio, Luís Abrunhosa Ochratoxin A (OTA) is one of the main mycotoxins that can be found in food. The use of gamma radiation is a technique for preserving food that may exert some effects on mycotoxins. OTA was irradiated in its dry form, in aqueous and in methanolic solutions, and in wheat flour, grape juice and wine. Additionally, the toxicity of OTA irradiated in water was tested. In aqueous solutions, more than 90% of the OTA was degraded by γ-radiation dos...

Assessment of the Cavidi ExaVir Load Assay for Monitoring Plasma Viral Load in HIV-2-Infected Patients [Virology]
In conclusion, ExaVir Load version 3 is a reliable commercial assay to measure viral load in HIV-2-infected patients and therefore a valuable alternative to the in-house assays in current use. (Source: Journal of Clinical Microbiology)

Redescription of the halophile ciliate, Blepharisma halophilum Ruinen, 1938 (Ciliophora, Heterotrichea, Heterotrichida) shows that the genus Blepharisma is non-monophyletic.
Abstract We collected a heterotrich ciliate from hypersaline waters on the Cape Verde island Sal. After living observation and protargol-staining, it closely matched Blepharisma halophilum Ruinen, 1938. However, because (i) Ruinen most likely described several different species as B. halophilum, and (ii) he provided only very scarce diagnostic features, we redescribe this species with state-of-the-art methods according to modern standards. This will facilitate an accurate identification of this ciliate species, globally distributed in hypersaline water bodies: halophile Blepharisma, about 100-250μm in viv...

Food Choice Questionnaire in an African country – Application and validation in Cape Verde
This study aims to evaluate the applicability of FCQ in Cape Verde, as well as to create consumer groups according to food choice motivations. Face to face interviews were conducted with 503 participants and replicated with 119 individuals. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed yielding unsatisfactory fit indexes. Subsequently, an exploratory factor analysis was performed revealing nine factors: ‘nutritional aspect and diet’, ‘sensory appeal’, ‘mood’, ‘wellbeing’, ‘convenience’, ‘price’, ‘familiarity’, ‘ethical concern’ and ‘natural content’. The hierarchical cluster analysis iden...

Light pollution affects nesting behavior of loggerhead turtles and predation risk of nests and hatchlings
Publication date: Available online 3 June 2017 Source:Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology Author(s): Elton Silva, Adolfo Marco, Jesemine da Graça, Héctor Pérez, Elena Abella, Juan Patino-Martinez, Samir Martins, Corrine Almeida The introduction of artificial light into wildlife habitats is a rapidly expanding aspect of global change, which has many negative impacts on a wide range of taxa. In this experimental study, which took place on a beach located on the island of Boa Vista (Cabo Verde), three types of artificial light were tested on nesting loggerhead sea turtles as well as on ghost cra...

Perspectives on quality mental health care from Brazilian and Cape Verdean outpatients: Implications for effective patient-centered policies and models of care.
Authors: De Jesus M, Earl TR Abstract Mental health providers are increasingly coming into contact with large and growing multi-racial/ethnic and immigrant patient populations in the United States. Knowledge of patient perspectives on what constitutes quality mental health care is necessary for these providers. The aim of this study was to identify indicators of quality of mental health care that matter most to two underrepresented immigrant patient groups of Portuguese background: Brazilians and Cape Verdeans. A qualitative design was adopted using focus group discussions. Six focus groups of patients (n=...
