Aedes –Chikungunya Virus Interaction: Key Role of Vector Midguts Microbiota and Its Saliva in the Host Infection
Conclusion and Perspectives Arbovirus infections, such as CHIKV, have been growing worldwide and are becoming a major public health problem, especially in immuno-compromised classes such as children and the elderly. CHIKV is dangerous since it can cause arthritis, fever and other impairments, making it necessary to seek new ways to counter the proliferation of this virus. Knowing the vector’s competence is fundamentally important, including an understanding of the vector virus interaction and the modulation of this interaction. Despite advances in the knowledge of mosquito competence in the transmission of CHIKV, l...

Zika Virus Potentiates the Development of Neurological Defects and Microcephaly: Challenges and Control Strategies
Conclusions Apart West Nile virus (78), thousands of congenital microcephaly cases, fetal brain tissue damage and neurological syndromes have been associated with ZIKV infection. Unfortunately, the epidemics of this mosquito born, and a relative stable virus is on a rise. Although congenital microcephaly is a rare disorder however, due to lack of standardized diagnostic test facilities, the incidence in the geographically widespread ZIKV epidemic regions is higher. Animals studies showed that ZIKV is a neurotropic virus. It directly targets the developing embryonic brain cells by inducing apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest, and...

Food choice and food consumption frequency of Cape Verde inhabitants.
This study aims to evaluate food consumption and its association with the underlying motives for consumers' food choices, through the application of a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) followed by a Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ). Face to face interviews were conducted with 503 participants, recruited at their homes, workplaces, health centers and other central locations in Cape Verde, only including subjects aged ≥18 years, without a self-reported history of chronic diseases. Food frequency analysis, as well as exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) were used to determine dietary patterns and nonparametric statistical t...

Unusual cause of left ventricular dysfunction in a child
Publication date: Available online 23 March 2019Source: Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia (English Edition)Author(s): Maria Emanuel Amaral, Pedro Epifânio, Natália Noronha, António Pires, Paula Martins, Vanda Azevedo, Eduardo Castela, Manuel J. AntunesAbstractAnomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is a rare congenital heart defect and a cause of myocardial ischemia during childhood. Most undiagnosed cases die in the first year of life as an extensive collateral network is essential for survival. The diagnosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion. The authors present the case of an ...

Characterization of GPS and EGNOS Amplitude Scintillations over the African Equatorial/low-latitude Region
This study characterizes GPS and EGNOS amplitude scintillations over the African equatorial/low-latitude region. The data set covers January–December, 2013 at three stations; namely, Cape-Verde Island (Lat: 16oN, Lon: 24oW°W, Mag. Lat: 11oN), Dakar (Lat: 14.75oN, Lon: 17.45oW, Mag. Lat: 5.88oN) [Senegal] and Addis Ababa (Lat: 9.03oN, Lon: 38.77oW, Mag. Lat: 0.18oN) [Ethiopia]. Firstly, we investigated the seasonal variations of scintillations over the study sites. In doing this, we suppressed multipath effects on the data by imposing a 30o elevation masking on the data. Seasonally, scintillations recorded highest occu...

Evolution of the Medical Education Policy in Cabo Verde
The objective of this article is to analyze the perception of several key informants of the Cabo Verdean society about the medical education in the country and to propose means to reformulate its Policy of Medical Education. A qualitative study that results from the content analysis of interviews and group discussions, as well as news in the Cabo Verdean media, identified key elements of policy reformulation in terms of content, context, processes and main actors involved in the reconsideration of the medical course. Respondents considered essential to have an engaging medical education policy to guide the development of t...

IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 2: Heavy Metals of Santiago Island (Cape Verde) Alluvial Deposits: Baseline Value Maps and Human Health Risk Assessment
lva The chemical composition of surface geological materials may cause metabolic changes and promote endemic diseases (e.g., oncological, gastrointestinal, neurological or cardiovascular diseases). The results of a geochemical survey is presented following the guidelines proposed by the International Project IGCP 259 performed on the alluvium of Santiago Island (Cape Verde) and focused on public health issues. Geochemical mapping is the base knowledge needed to determine critical contents of potential toxic elements and the potentially harmful regions in the planet. This work presents maps of baseline values of potenti...

Effectiveness of gamma and electron beam irradiation as preserving technologies of fresh Agaricus bisporus Portobello: A comparative study
Publication date: 25 April 2019Source: Food Chemistry, Volume 278Author(s): Rossana V.C. Cardoso, Ângela Fernandes, João C.M. Barreira, Sandra Cabo Verde, Amilcar L. Antonio, Ana M. Gonzaléz-Paramás, Lillian Barros, Isabel C.F.R. FerreiraAbstractMushroom production and consumption is increasing, but high perishability still represents a major commercial drawback. Besides increasing the product shelf-life, conservation processes should be innocuous to consumers. Therefore, the effects of gamma and electron beam radiation on chemical and nutritional composition of fresh samples of Agaricus bisporus Portobello (a highly c...

Genes, Vol. 9, Pages 599: What Is the Giant Wall Gecko Having for Dinner? Conservation Genetics for Guiding Reserve Management in Cabo Verde
In this study, we identified the main plant, arthropods, and vertebrates consumed by both gecko subspecies using next generation sequencing (NGS) (metabarcoding of faecal pellets), and compared them with the species known to occur on Santa Luzia. Results showed that plants have a significant role as diet items and identified vertebrate and invertebrate taxa with higher taxonomic resolution than traditional methods. With this study, we now have data on the diet of both subspecies for evaluating the reintroduction of this threatened gecko on Santa Luzia as potentially successful, considering the generalist character of both ...

Spatial Distribution of Invasive Pneumococcal Serotypes in West Africa: A Retrospective Analysis to Inform Immunization in Persons with Sickle Cell Disease
Conclusions: To our knowledge this is the first attempt to aggregate IPD serotype data across West Africa. While the majority of serotypes identified are included in PCV13, two serotypes exclusive to PPSV23 (2 and 12F) together accounted for 8.1% of the total IPD burden. Moreover, in some countries, the proportion of strains included in PPSV23 and not PCV13 is higher. Immunizing persons with SCD in West Africa with PPSV23 therefore may be warranted to optimize protection from IPD. Furthermore, as PCV13 vaccination coverage increases, it is possible that the epidemiology of IPD may shift to more strains exclusively covered ...
