Compulsory treatment in Portuguese-speaking countries: An analysis and comparison of the legal framework
CONCLUSIONS: The significant disparities in compulsory treatment policies among Portuguese-speaking countries, with only Brazil, Cape Verde, and Portugal having specific legislation, underscore the need for a collective effort to establish more consistent procedures and safeguard individual rights.PMID:38181487 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijlp.2023.101950 (Source: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry)

The Atlantic is being ringed with tiny sensors in an ambitious effort to track climate change
Viana do Castelo, Portugal— One wrong move, and the sea-battered granite boulders lining North Beach here can break an ankle. But this summer, marine biologist Fernando Lima hopped among the algae-covered rocks like a child playing hopscotch. He eventually settled next to a suitcase-size boulder that held what he sought: an electronic sensor, just 3 centimeters wide and shaped like a hockey puck, that he and his research team had embedded in the rock the year before. Lima, who works with the Biopolis Association and the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at the University of Porto,...

Prevalence of Persons with Disability Enrolled in Undergraduate Medical Schools in Brazil, 2019
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of PWD medical students in Brazil is low, and is dominated by students with physical and sensory disabilities but lacks the deaf-blind. Despite the existence of legal regulations favoring PWD to study medicine, some medical schools have not done adequate adjustments to accommodate them. This suggests that affirmative policies for the inclusion of PWD in higher education, particularly in medicine, still need improvement.PMID:37901758 | PMC:PMC10611937 | DOI:10.30476/JAMP.2023.99332.1840 (Source: Adv Data)

Perceived discrimination, adaptation and saudade among African migrants
This study aims to examine the relationships between perception of discrimination, adaptation and saudade. The sample consisted of 655 African migrants from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique living in Portugal with a mean age of 38 years. The average duration of stay in Portugal was 22 years.Results indicated that length of residence impacted the difficulties experienced with saudade: respondents with longer lengths of stay in the society of settlement experienced less difficulty with saudade. As predicted, the results indicated that higher perceptions of discrimination and loneliness correlated positivel...

The worldwide epidemiology of lip and oral cavity cancer attributable to smoking based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
ConclusionThe overall disease burden attributable to smoking is decreasing, but the number of deaths and DALYs are still increasing. Moreover, there are regional and national differences, and high-risk regions and countries should implement targeted interventions to reduce the burden. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

Behavioural and biological risk factors of non-communicable diseases among adults in Cabo Verde: a repeated cross-sectional study of the 2007 and 2020 national community-based surveys
Conclusions Of the nine NCD risk factors evaluated from 2007 to 2020 in Cabo Verde, two increased (overweight/obesity and low physical activity) and one decreased (hypertension). Several associated variables were identified for each individual NCD risk factor that can help in guiding interventions. (Source: BMJ Open)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1620: The First Case of Zika Virus Disease in Guinea: Description, Virus Isolation, Sequencing, and Seroprevalence in Local Population
oi Mamadou Y. Boiro Alexander P. Agafonov Lyudmila S. Karan The Zika virus (ZIKV) is a widespread mosquito-borne pathogen. Phylogenetically, two lineages of ZIKV are distinguished: African and Asian–American. The latter became the cause of the 2015–2016 pandemic, with severe consequences for newborns. In West African countries, the African lineage was found, but there is evidence of the emergence of the Asian–American lineage in Cape Verde and Angola. This highlights the need to not only monitor ZIKV but also sequence the isolates. In this article, we present a case repor...

Human biomonitoring of inorganic elements in a representative sample of the general population from Cape Verde: Results from the PERVEMAC-II study
Chemosphere. 2023 Jul 20:139594. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139594. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInorganic elements such as heavy metals and other potentially toxic elements are frequently detected in humans. The aim of the present study was to analyze the blood concentrations of 49 inorganic elements in a cohort of 401 subjects from Cape Verde. The study was performed in the frame of the Pesticide Residues in Vegetables of the Macaronesia project (PERVEMAC-II). Concentration of inorganic elements, including elements in the ATSDR's priority pollutant list and rare earth elements (RREs) were measured by ICP-MS in the ...

Naegleria australiensis isolated from a wastewater treatment station in Santiago Island, Cape Verde
J Water Health. 2023 Mar;21(3):443-450. doi: 10.2166/wh.2023.008.ABSTRACTDespite the Naegleria genus being isolated from different natural environments such as water, soil, and air, not all Naegleria species are capable of causing infections in humans, and they are capable of completing their life cycle in environmental niches. However, the presence of this genus may suggest the existence of one of the highly pathogenic free-living amoeba (FLA) species: Naegleria fowleri or the brain-eating amoeba. This facultative parasitic protozoon represents a risk to public health, mainly related to domestic and agricultural waters. I...
