Comparing Voluntary Activities Among Immigrant and Non-immigrant. Focus on Third Country Nationals
AbstractThe main purpose of this paper is to compare the involvement in voluntary organizations of two non-EU groups of students (of former-Yugoslavian and of Cape Verdean immigrant background) with their EU and native counterparts in Luxembourg. In this comparison, we aim to account for the fact students with a non-EU background differ systematically from other youth groups in their observable characteristics. The propensity score matching method is used to account for selection into particular groups by making compared groups similar to each other for a wide range of observed characteristics. Our results reveal that stud...

Lesions Observed Post Mortem in Post-hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) from a Head Start Programme
We describe the gross and histological lesions found in 78 post-hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that died during captive rearing in the conservation programme of the Cape Verde-Canary Islands, initiated with 113 hatchlings. The main organ systems affected were respiratory (57.69%), integumentary (41.02%) and digestive (41.02%), affecting 94.87% of the animals. Other less frequently affected organ systems were cardiovascular (3.85%), excretory (3.85%), muscular (2.56%) and reproductive (1.28%). The most common lesions were different types of dermatitis (41.02%), mainly ulcerative and/or heterophilic ulcer...

Tuberculosis and Immigration - A retrospective study at an urban Chest Disease Center
Conclusions: The high incidence rates of TB among immigrant population are mostly a reflection of the incidence rates in their countries of origin. Host countries have a responsibility to develop a deeper knowledge about health care needs of immigrants in general and particularly for TB, because of the impact of international migration on local TB epidemiology. Community participation and private sector engagement are fundamental to achieving universal health coverage and health security in Africa: reflections from the second Africa health forum
ConclusionsThe Forum participants agreed that the role of community engagement and participation in the attainment of Universal Health Coverage, health security and ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals cannot be overemphasized. The public sector of Africa alone cannot achieve these three interrelated goals; other partners, such as the private sector, must be engaged. Technological innovations will be a key driver of the attainment of these goals; hence, there is need to harness the comparative advantages that they offer. Attainment of the three goals is also intertwined – achieving one paves the way for achieving...

Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire in Two Subpopulations from Cape Verde and Mozambique: Exploratory and Regression Analysis.
CONCLUSION: Parent-reported sleep problems underestimate the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire results. This is not necessarily indicative of more disturbed sleep and might reflect differences in sleep behavior, childcare practice, and cognitions and attitudes towards the concept of 'normal' sleep. Non-verbal nurse-parturient communication in labor in Portuguese-speaking countries.
CONCLUSION: similarities were observed in non-verbal communication between nurses and parturients in both countries. However, there are differences such as the established contact between Brazilian and Cape Verdean nurses to parturients. Genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in feral pig populations from Argentina
The objective of this study is to genetically characterize the oldest feral pig populations in Argentina, making use of the mitochondrial control region (CR) and the amelogenin gene (AmelY), in order to determine their phylogenetic origin and corroborate its consistency with the historic information. The obtained results indicate that most of the feral pigs in Corrientes and Buenos Aires populations are positioned in the European subclades, E1-A and E1-C for CR, and HY1 and HY2 for AmelY. Despite this fact, a low frequency of individuals of Asian origin was found in populations from Buenos Aires, whereas none of them discl...

Viruses, Vol. 11, Pages 860: Genetic Diversity of the Hepatitis B Virus Subgenotypes in Brazil
In conclusion, this study provided a comprehensive overview of the current circulation of HBV subgenotypes in Brazil. Our findings might contribute to a better understand of the dynamics of viral variants, to establish a permanent molecular surveillance on the introduction and dispersion patterns of new strains and, thus, to support public policies to control HBV dissemination in Brazil. The Actor in 4 Dimensions: A Relevant Methodology to Analyze Local Environmental Governance and Inform Ostrom's Social-Ecological Systems Framework
Publication date: Available online 31 July 2019Source: MethodsXAuthor(s): Raphaëlle Dancette, Léa SebastienAbstractThis paper presents the Actor in 4 dimensions (A4D) model as a complementary tool to the Social-ecological systems framework (SESF) in order to better integrate individual and groups' representations into local environmental governance analysis. As the A4D is based on actors' representations of their social-ecological system (SES) and of its governance, it mainly informs the Actors subsystem of the SESF, even if it can also give useful insights for other framework's sub-systems. We define the SESF actor's su...

Benthic dinoflagellates: Testing the reliability of the artificial substrate method in the Macaronesian region
Publication date: July 2019Source: Harmful Algae, Volume 87Author(s): Juan Fernández-Zabala, Fernando Tuya, Ana Amorim, Emilio Soler-OnísAbstractThe suitability of the ‘artificial substrate’ method, i.e. standardized surfaces of fiberglass screens, for the quantification of four benthic harmful algal bloom (BHAB) dinoflagellates (Gambierdiscus, Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum and Coolia) was tested relative to estimates from natural macroalgal substrates. Sampling took place in a variety of intertidal and subtidal coastal habitats under different water motion conditions, at depths from 1 to 7 m, in two archipelagos of the...

Virucidal activity of gamma radiation on strawberries and raspberries.
The objective of this study was to estimate the inactivation of enteric virus by gamma radiation in raw berry fruits, in order to evaluate the potential of this technology to be applied as a disinfection treatment. Fresh strawberries and raspberries were inoculated either individually with murine norovirus type 1 (MuNoV; as a human norovirus surrogate) and human adenovirus type 5 (HAdV) or with a viral pool of both viruses, and irradiated in a Co-60 equipment at doses of 1 kGy up to 11 kGy. The infectivity of viral particles of MuNoV and HAdV was assessed by plaque assay using Raw 264.7 and A549 cells, respectively. A ...
