Year-round at-sea distribution and trophic resources partitioning between two sympatric Sulids in the tropical Atlantic
by Nathalie Almeida, Jaime A. Ramos, Isabel Rodrigues, Ivo dos Santos, Jorge M. Pereira, Diana M. Matos, Pedro M. Ara újo, Pedro Geraldes, Tommy Melo, Vitor H. Paiva In the oligotrophic tropical marine environment resources are usually more patchily distributed and less abundant to top predators. Thus, spatial and trophic competition can emerge, especially between related seabird species belonging to the same ecological guild. Here we studied the foraging ecol ogy of two sympatric species–brown booby (BRBO)Sula leucogaster (breeding) and red-footed boobies (RFBO)Sula sula (non-breeding) –at Raso islet (Cabo Verde), a...

Viruses, Vol. 13, Pages 1093: Genetic Characterization of a New HIV-1 Sub-Subtype A in Cabo Verde, Denominated A8
arães Previous molecular characterization of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) samples from Cabo Verde pointed out a vast HIV-1 pol diversity, with several subtypes and recombinant forms, being 5.2% classified as AU-pol. Thus, the aim of the present study was to improve the characterization of these AU sequences. The genomic DNA of seven HIV-1 AU pol-infected individuals were submitted to four overlapping nested-PCR fragments aiming to compose the full-length HIV-1 genome. The final classification was based on phylogenetic trees that were generated using the maximum likelihood and bootscan analysis. The genetic dis...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 3833: Toxic Metals in Cereals in Cape Verde: Risk Assessment Evaluation
In this study, toxic metal content (Cr, Ni, Sr, Al, Cd, and Pb) is determined in 126 samples of cereals and derivatives (rice, corn, wheat, corn flour, wheat flour, corn gofio) consumed in Cape Verde. Wheat flour samples stand out, with the highest Sr (1.60 mg/kg), Ni (0.25 mg/kg) and Cr (0.13 mg/kg) levels. While the consumption of 100 g/day of wheat would contribute to 13.2% of the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of Ni, a consumption of 100 g/day of wheat flour would contribute to 8.18% of the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of Cd. Results show relevant Al levels (1.17–13.4 mg/kg), with the highest level observed in corn go...

Drug resistance profile and clonality of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in Cape Verde: the 2017 malaria outbreak
Cape Verde is an archipelago located off the West African coast and is in a pre-elimination phase of malaria control. Since 2010, fewer than 20 Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases have been reported annually, exc... (Source: Malaria Journal)

Human pegivirus 1 in Cabo Verde: prevalence and genotypic distribution among HIV-infected individuals
AbstractHuman pegivirus 1 (HPgV-1) belongs to the genusPegivirus, familyFlaviviridae, and until now has been considered a non-pathogenic agent, despite being considered a risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, a beneficial impact of HPgV-1 on HIV disease progression has been extensively reported. Given the high prevalence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and the scarcity of epidemiological data for many countries of West Africa, we conducted the first study of HPgV-1 in HIV-infected individuals from Cabo Verde. To obtain new data regarding prevalence and genetic diversity of HPgV-1 in Africa, serum samples from 102 HIV...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 850: I-DECIDE: A Social Prescribing and Digital Intervention Protocol to Promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Quality of Life among Young Cape Verdeans
driana Henriques Cape Verdean governments have intensified the investment on the National Reproductive Health Program, aiming to provide universal and qualified services, especially to the youngest people. Nevertheless, data suggest that some health challenges remain in this group (e.g., high rates of early/unplanned pregnancies, illegal abortions, sexual risk behaviors). In this paper, we present a protocol of a community-based social prescribing and digital intervention to promote wellbeing and quality of life across the life course of young Cape Verdeans, with a specific focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)...

Rapid adaptation to malaria facilitated by admixture in the human population of Cabo Verde
Humans have undergone large migrations over the past hundreds to thousands of years, exposing ourselves to new environments and selective pressures. Yet, evidence of ongoing or recent selection in humans is difficult to detect. Many of these migrations also resulted in gene flow between previously separated populations. These recently admixed populations provide unique opportunities to study rapid evolution in humans. Developing methods based on distributions of local ancestry, we demonstrate that this sort of genetic exchange has facilitated detectable adaptation to a malaria parasite in the admixed population of Cabo Ver...

Ethnic differences in childhood right and left cardiac structure and function assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging
Conclusion: Right ventricular end-diastolic volume and left ventricular end-diastolic volume differ between ethnic subgroups in childhood, without affecting ejection fraction. Follow-up studies are needed to investigate whether these differences lead to ethnic differences in cardiac disease in adulthood. What is Known:•Ethnic differences in cardiovascular risk factors and disease are well-known and may originate in early-life.•The prevalence of cardiovascular disease differs between ethnic groups. What is New:•We examined ethnic differences in left and right cardiac structure and function in children using cMRI.•Righ...

Telemedicine Programs in Albania and Cabo Verde: A Follow-Up Report Post-Transfer Phase and Validation of Initiate-Build-Operate-Transfer Strategy
Two Nationwide telemedicine programs (Albania, Cabo Verde) were built by the International Virtual e-Hospital Foundation (IVeH) based on initiate-build-operate-transfer (IBOT) structured strategy. Each of these programs have been transferred to local Ministry of Health. The aim of this study was to compare these two programs in the 3 and 8 years post-transfer phase, respectively.
