Smoking-Related Interstitial Lung Disease
In the twenty- first century, there is widespread agreement that in addition to lung cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, cigarette smoking causes accumulation of pigmented macrophages, interstitial fibrosis, and Langerhans cell proliferation in various permutations. These histologic changes remain subclinical in some patients and produce clinical manifestations and imaging abnormalities in others. Debate surrounds terminology of these lesions, which are often grouped together under the umbrella of “smoking-related interstitial lung disease.” This review summarizes modern concepts in our understanding of these ab...

Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke on Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWildfire smoke is associated with human health, becoming an increasing public health concern. However, a comprehensive synthesis of the current evidence on the health impacts of ambient wildfire smoke on children and adolescents, an exceptionally vulnerable population, is lacking. We conduct a systematic review of peer-reviewed epidemiological studies on the association between wildfire smoke and health of children and adolescents.Recent FindingsWe searched for studies available in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus from database inception up to October 11, 2022. Of 4926 studies initially identified, 59 s...

P018 What is the incidence of hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) in patients that undergo oral and maxillo-facial surgery (OMFS) with free flap reconstruction for head and neck malignancy?
Literature exists on complications rates post-surgery, including HAP however there is paucity in the literature describing rates of infection without consolidation – bronchitis. There is conflicting evidence on risk factors that predispose patients. The primary aim was to describe rates of respiratory infection (RI) (bronchitis& HAP). The secondary aim was to evaluate if tumour size, pre- existing respiratory co-morbidity, smoking history, and tracheostomy were predictors of RI. Protection of laying chickens against the Canadian DMV/1639 infectious bronchitis virus infection through priming with heterologous live vaccine and boosting with heterologous or homologous inactivated vaccine
Virus Res. 2023 Nov 21:199281. doi: 10.1016/j.virusres.2023.199281. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe emergence of the Canadian DMV/1639 infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) type strains was associated with egg production disorders in Eastern Canadian layer operations. While developing vaccines for novel IBV variants is not typically a reasonable approach, the consideration of an autogenous vaccine becomes more appealing, particularly when the new variant presents significant economic challenges. The current study aimed to compare the efficacies of two vaccination programs that included heterologous live priming by Massachuse...

Plastic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae
Plastic bronchitis is characterized by sputum obstructing the bronchus and causing atelectasis. Bronchoscopic removal of the clogged bronchial cast is typically performed, but small-diameter bronchoscopes with narrow suction ports cannot achieve adequate suction. Suction using a bronchoscope as a guide sheath may be effective for treating plastic bronchitis in children. Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2285: Comparison of Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) Pathogenesis and Host Responses in Young Male and Female Chickens
Faizal Abdul-Careem Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is an avian coronavirus that causes a disease in chickens known as infectious bronchitis (IB). The pathogenesis of IBV and the host immune responses against it depend on multiple factors such as the IBV variant, breed and age of the chicken, and the environment provided by the management. Since there is limited knowledge about the influence of the sex of chickens in the pathogenesis of IBV, in this study we aim to compare IBV pathogenesis and host immune responses in young male and female chickens. One-week-old specific pathogen-free (SPF) White Leghorn male and fem...

Isolation and identification of two pathogens causing leaf spot of Fritillaria taipaiensis P. Y. Li. in China
Arch Microbiol. 2023 Nov 21;206(1):1. doi: 10.1007/s00203-023-03721-7.ABSTRACTFritillaria taipaiensis P. Y. Li is one of the biological sources for Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus. Its bulbs are widely used for treating respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, bronchitis and influenza. Cultivated F. taipaiensis suffers from many diseases during its growing season. Leaf spot is a destructive disease that is increasingly affecting F. taipaiensis and can cause an incidence of up to 30% in severe cases. Leaf spot inhibits the growth of F. taipaiensis by causing disease spots on the surface of leaves. In severe cases, these spots ...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2279: Revealing Novel-Strain-Specific and Shared Epitopes of Infectious Bronchitis Virus Spike Glycoprotein Using Chemical Linkage of Peptides onto Scaffolds Precision Epitope Mapping
ervelde The avian coronavirus, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), is an economically important infectious disease affecting chickens, with a diverse range of serotypes found globally. The major surface protein, spike (S), has high diversity between serotypes, and amino acid differences in the S1 sub-unit are thought to be responsible for poor cross-protection afforded by vaccination. Here, we attempt to address this, by using epitope mapping technology to identify shared and serotype-specific immunogenic epitopes of the S glycoprotein of three major circulating strains of IBV, M41, QX, and 4/91, via CLIPS peptide array...

Effect of ambient air pollution on hospital admission for respiratory diseases in Hanoi children during 2007-2019
This study aims to quantify the association between short-term air pollution exposure and respiratory hospital admissions among children in Hanoi, Vietnam, and estimate the population-attributable burden using local data. A case-crossover analysis was conducted based on the individual records where each case is their own control. The health data was obtained from 13 hospitals in Hanoi and air pollution data was collected from four monitoring stations from 2007 to 2019. We used conditional logistic regression to estimate Percentage Change (PC) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) in odd of hospital admissions per 10 μg/m3 incr...

High oral carriage of multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacilli in adolescents: the SOPKARD-Junior study
ConclusionOur study revealed high oral carriage of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli in healthy adolescents and the association of ESBL-producing strains with respiratory infections. Further studies on oral colonization with GNB are necessary due to the possibility of distinct infections and the acquisition of antibiotic resistance by resident microbiota. Prevalence and associations between occupational diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in Northern China
This study examined the prevalence and associations between occupational-related diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in Northern China. The study sampled 506 miners from two coal mines in Northern China. Descriptive (frequency, percentages, and chi-square tests) and inferential (complementary log-log logistic regression) analyses were carried out to assess prevalence and associations. The prevalence of coal mining-related pulmonary diseases was 94%, with 40% and 37% reporting pneumoconiosis and bronchitis respectively. Emphysema and tuberculosis were less prevalent with a total prevalenc...
