Depression from childhood to early adulthood and association with respiratory symptoms
Conclusions: Childhood depression was associated with an increased risk of respiratory ill-health in early adulthood, independently of smoking. Links to metabolic and inflammatory dysregulations were suggested. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Pre-COPD in young adults and COPD later in life: A population-based cross-cohort comparison study
Conclusions: Our study suggests that presence of pre-COPD in young adults is an important risk factor for COPD later in life and can be used for early identification of susceptible individuals.Funding: Copenhagen University Hospital – Herlev and Gentofte. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Late Breaking Abstract - Combined treatment of Formoterol and Tanimilast improves lung organoid growth
Conclusion: Our findings support the beneficial effect of combined Tanimilast-Formoterol therapy on rescuing CS-impaired organoid formation, suggesting this to be a promising therapeutic approach for defective lung repair in COPD. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Clinical characteristics of patients with COPD in Hong Kong
This retrospective study analysed patient (pt) characteristics, maintenance treatment and hospital-related healthcare resource use (HCRU) of pts with COPD aged ≥40 years (y), excluding pts with acute exacerbation, pneumonia or acute bronchitis. Pts were indexed upon entry to a Prince of Wales Hospital (Hong Kong) cohort from 1Jan2017 to 31Dec2019 and followed up every 6 months for up to 3y. Mean (SD) age at enrollment (N=220) was 74.3 (10.1) y and number of comorbidities was 2.6 (1.7); 3% were female; 31% had ≥1 exacerbation ≤12 months pre-index. At baseline, multiple inhaled triple therapy (MITT) was the most com...

Addressing treatable traits: a meta-analysis to assess the effect of N-acetylcysteine on respiratory symptoms and exacerbations in pre-COPD and COPD patients
Conclusions: The results of the meta-analysis suggest that oral treatment with NAC may improve respiratory symptoms and reduce exacerbations in CB/preCOPD patients. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD)
Conclusions: A normal spirometry does not exclude presence of AATD related lung disease even in genotypes other than PIZZ with high risk to develop severe emphysema during adulthood compared to other PI-types. Furthermore, there should be a greater awareness of this disease among pediatricians, especially it is mandatory to test AT level with a suggestive clinic or positive family history. Highly selective furin inhibition as a therapeutic approach for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
This study also aimed to determine whether BOS-857 used in combination with CFTR potentiator, ivacaftor would provide additional benefit.BOS-857 treatment of COPD HBECs significantly reduced ENaC-mediated Na+ absorption by 80% after a 48h exposure and prevented subsequent cell-surface activation of ENaC by neutrophil elastase. Treatment of COPD HBECs with either BOS-857 or VX-770 alone improved MCT rates. When COPD HBECs were treated with a combination of BOS-857 and VX-770, significant improvements in MCT rate over VX-770 alone were observed. These studies support highly selective furin inhibition as a therapeutic approach...

Oscillometry parameters in chronic cough
Conclusion: Subjects with only CC did not present altered FOT parameters, indicative of absence of structural airway changes. Otherwise, Z data in CB are inidicative for presence of SAD.FOT seems a reliable and sensitive technique to assess airway pathology in CC and CB. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Analysis of risk factors for protracted bacterial bronchitis in infancy and long-term sequelae
Conclusion: Our study confirms that a significant proportion of children with PBB develop long-term bronchopulmonary sequelae, measurable by abnormal PFTs. We found an association of PBB and later asthma. Retrospective analysis revealed, in addition to nicotine exposure, that prematurity is a risk factor for PBB. To avoid late bronchopulmonary sequelae, continuous follow-up of these children is necessary. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Pediatric non-CF bronchiectasis in the Vinnytsia region in Ukraine - what can we do better?
Conclusions: This is the first-time reported data for pediatric non-CF bronchiectasis from Ukraine. The disease seems to be underdiagnosed in the Vinnytsia region compared to epidemiological data in the European region. The etiology of pediatric bronchiectasis in Vinnytsia differs from published results from other countries probably because of some undiagnosed causes like protracted bacterial bronchitis, aspiration etc. More studies need to evaluate the true incidence of pediatric bronchiectasis in Ukraine.
