Case Report: Profound Anemia in a 2-Year-Old Boy Associated with a Leech in the Oropharynx
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Apr 2:tpmd230677. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0677. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 2-year-old boy presented to Kapsowar Mission Hospital in Kenya with a history of general tiredness associated with mild, unilateral epistaxis and one episode of hematemesis. On admission, he had a hemoglobin value of 3.5 g/dL, with a white cell count of 20.6 × 109/L. The child was examined by the physician on call, with no source of bleeding found. Later that day, after a local physician noted that the presentation could be due to an unrecognized leech infestation, a deep examination of the oropharynx was performed with a...

A retrospective study of ovarian tissue cryopreservation in female patients with hematological diseases for fertility preservation
ConclusionsOvarian tissue cryopreservation has a promising future in fertility protection in patients with hematological diseases. However, patients with hematological malignancies often have received gonadotoxic therapy before OTC, which may be accompanied by myelosuppression while patients with non-malignant hematological diseases often present with severe hemocytopenia. So perioperative complete blood count of patients should be paid attention to. There was no significant difference in the WBC count and hemoglobin concentration in patients with hematological diseases before and after OTC surgery, and the platelet count ...

Trainee Perceptions of Off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: UK Training Needs Survey
In recent years, there has been a progressive increase in the number of high-risk patients referred for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). These patients often present with comorbidities, advanced age, or complex coronary anatomy, and, in this context, off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) has emerged as a suitable and safer alternative to conventional on-pump surgery for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). OPCAB offers potential benefits such as reduced systemic inflammatory response, decreased need for blood transfusions, and improved postoperative recovery (1). Application of Multi-Department Cooperation, Intelligent Prevention, and Supervision to Reduce the Incidence of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of multi-department cooperation, intelligent prevention, and supervision (MDCIPS) in reducing the incidence of CLABSIs and improving the clinical outcomes of the patients. Key issues were identified through a literature review and survey on the status quo. A MDCIPS model was thus built. A total of 440 patients with indwelling central venous catheters (CVCs) were enrolled in the study. The control group (n = 219) received conventional infection-control managements, while the intervention group (n = 221) received MDCIPS interventions in addition to conventional infection-c...

Comparison of safety and efficacy of tubeless vs. conventional mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy in patients with Escherichia coli bacteriuria
AbstractTo evaluate the safety and efficacy of tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in patients with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteriuria. We conducted a retrospective review of 84 patients with E. coli bacteriuria who underwent PCNL. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether a nephrostomy tube is placed at the end of the procedure. Preoperative clinical data, surgical outcomes, and postoperative complications were compared. Then, regression analysis of factors predicting success rate of PCNL in patients with E. coli bacteriuria was performed. After PCNL, residual fragments  ≤ 4 mm were co...

Trainee Perceptions of Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: United Kingdom Training Needs Survey
In recent years, there has been a progressive increase in the number of high-risk patients referred for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). These patients often present with co-morbidities, advanced age, or complex coronary anatomy, and, in this context, off-pump CABG (OPCAB) has emerged as a suitable and safer alternative to conventional on-pump CABG (ONCAB) for the treatment of coronary artery disease. OPCAB offers potential benefits such as reduced systemic inflammatory response, decreased need for blood transfusions, and improved postoperative recovery. Secondary syphilis presenting with alopecia and leukoderma in a stable HIV-positive patient in a resource-limited setting: a case report
CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the importance of a high index of clinical suspicion and testing for syphilis in patients presenting with atypical clinical features of secondary syphilis, such as hair loss and hypopigmentation. It also highlights the challenges in diagnosing and clinically managing syphilis in a resource-limited setting.PMID:38561779 | PMC:PMC10986119 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-024-00603-w (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)
