Impact of Implementing a Standard Operating Procedure to Reduce Blood Wastage in Blood Centers of Iran
CONCLUSION: This intervention effectively reduced waste and increased efficiency. Ongoing blood wastage reviews, auditing, and receiving feedback from the central headquarters were powerful tools in following the compliance of blood centers. Further studies are recommended, especially concerning blood wastage in hospital blood banks and various wards.PMID:38619032 | PMC:PMC11017257 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.14 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

The Outcomes of Patients with Omicron Variant Infection who Undergo Elective Surgery: A Propensity-score-matched Case-control Study
Conclusion: Omicron infection does not significantly increase the risk of perioperative major complications. The Omicron infection may not be a sufficient risk factor to postpone elective surgery.PMID:38616997 | PMC:PMC11008485 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.90695 (Source: International Journal of Medical Sciences)

Impact of Cell Salvage on Hematocrit and Post-Partum Anemia in Low Hemorrhage Risk Elective Cesarean Delivery
Postpartum anemia is a significant contributor to peripartum morbidity. The utilization of cell salvage in low risk cases and its impact on postpartum anemia has not been investigated. We therefore aimed to examine the impact of autologous blood transfusion/cell salvage in routine cesarean delivery on postoperative hematocrit and anemia. (Source: Transfusion and Apheresis Science)

The Evaluation of Mass/DNA Copy Number of Mitochondria in Umbilical Cord Blood-derived Hematopoietic Stem Cells Cocultured with MSCs
AbstractOver recent decades, UCB has been widely used as an excellent alternative source of HSCs for treating many hematologic disorders. Recent studies suggest using mesenchymal stroma cell co-cultures to increase the number of HSCs prior to transplantation. Considering the critical role of mitochondria in the cell's fate and the importance of the self-renewal capacity of HSCs in HSCT, we decided to investigate the mass/DNA copy number of mitochondria in HSCs while co-cultured with MSCs and alone after seven days. UCB units were collected from full-term deliveries. MSCs and HSCs were isolated from UCB and the purity of ce...

Comparison of the solid-phase red cell adherence assay and tube method for detection and identification of red blood cell antibodies
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first robust, 15-year study comparing methodologic sensitivity to detect clinically significant alloantibodies. The incidence of discordant results between PEG-IAT and the solid-phase technique was low. Among discordant samples, anti-Jka was commonly detected using the solid-phase method but not with the PEG-IAT. In contrast, anti-E was commonly detected by PEG-IAT but not by the solid-phase method.PMID:38607807 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae035 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)
