Addressing Thalassaemia Management from Patients' Perspectives: An International Collaborative Assessment
Conclusions: Important improvements in the care of thalassaemia patients have been documented during the past few decades. Nevertheless, additional focus is required through national healthcare systems to effectively address the many unmet needs revealed by our recent survey, as well as to achieve satisfactory patient outcomes.PMID:38674296 | PMC:PMC11052322 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040650 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

In-vitro Dilution of Human Plasma to Reduce ABO Antibody Titer Levels While Preserving Coagulation Factors
In conclusion, the mixing of A and B blood group plasma at a fixed ratio may be a promising strategy for the preparation of universal plasma with a low titre of haemolytic antibodies, while maintaining an adequate a mount of coagulation factors. Impact of blood salvage therapy during oncologic liver surgeries on allogenic transfusion events, survival, and recurrence, an ambidirectional cohort study
CONCLUSION: The use of Cell Saver® should not be avoided in oncologic surgeries of the liver. Use of Cell Saver® for major hepatectomies might be more beneficial as OS was significantly lower for the Cell Saver® group for patients who underwent minor hepactomies. Further research is needed to explain this conflicting result. Nonetheless, the use of Cell Saver® in autologous blood transfusions can reduce the use of valuable resources and the risks associated with allogenic blood transfusions.PMID:38666789 | DOI:10.1097/JS9.0000000000001458 (Source: Hand Surgery)

A comparative analysis of robotic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy in octogenarians
This study was undertaken to compare the peri-operative variables between robotic and ‘open’ pancreaticoduodenectomy, in octogenarians (≥ 80 years of age). Since 2012, with IRB approval, we retrospectively followed 69 patients, who underwent robotic (n = 42) and ‘open’ (n = 27) pancreaticoduodenectomy. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square test and Student’st test. Data are presented as median(mean  ± SD), and significance accepted with 95% probability. Patients who underwent the robotic approach had a greater Charlson Comorbidity Index [6 (6 ± 1.6) vs 5 (5 ± 1.0), (p =...

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with β-Thalassemia that Underwent Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
CONCLUSION: HRQoL is generally good in β-TM transplanted patients and may significantly contribute in deciding whether or not to transplant a β-TM patient treated with conventional therapy.PMID:38659631 | PMC:PMC11037551 | DOI:10.2174/17450179-v17-e211208-2021-HT2-1910-4 (Source: Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health)

The influence of hematological profiles on the transfusion management and mortality risk of mothers presenting to the obstetric unit of a South African tertiary medical facility
DISCUSSION: Adolescence, anemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia expose mothers to a high risk for transfusion and/or mortality. These risk factors should promptly trigger management and referral of patients. Presenting hematological profiles are strong predictors of maternal outcome and transfusion risk.PMID:38661229 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17849 (Source: Transfusion)

Naturally Occurring Anti-D in a Male Blood Donor, Unresolved Mystery
AbstractIn accordance with numerous national and international criteria, screening donated blood for abnormal antibodies against red cell antigens is crucial for patient safety. Antibodies can be formed by three mechanisms: by immune responses, naturally occurring, or passively acquired. In accordance with departmental policy, ICT was performed on a 30-yearold male blood donor's sample in addition to ABO Rh grouping. He tested A Rh Dnegative and had a positive ICT (+  2). Anti-D was identified by using the antibody screening and identification panel. Retesting revealed similar results, so we called the donor. We were una...
