Secondary syphilis presenting with alopecia and leukoderma in a stable HIV-positive patient in a resource-limited setting: a case report
CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the importance of a high index of clinical suspicion and testing for syphilis in patients presenting with atypical clinical features of secondary syphilis, such as hair loss and hypopigmentation. It also highlights the challenges in diagnosing and clinically managing syphilis in a resource-limited setting.PMID:38561779 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-024-00603-w (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

Anemia in patients receiving anticancer treatments: focus on novel therapeutic approaches
Anemia is common in cancer patients and impacts on quality of life and prognosis. It is typically multifactorial, often involving different pathophysiological mechanisms, making treatment a difficult task. In patients undergoing active anticancer treatments like chemotherapy, decreased red blood cell (RBC) production due to myelosuppression generally predominates, but absolute or functional iron deficiency frequently coexists. Current treatments for chemotherapy-related anemia include blood transfusions, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, and iron supplementation. Each option has limitations, and there is an urgent need fo...

Development and evaluation of trigger tools to identify pediatric blood management errors
DISCUSSION: It is feasible to automatically detect pediatric PBM errors using existing data captured in the EHR that enable active surveillance systems. Over-transfusions may be one of the most frequent causes of harm in the pediatric environment.PMID:38557324 | DOI:10.2450/BloodTransfus.606 (Source: Blood Transfusion)

Genomic characterisation of clinically significant blood group variants in Aboriginal Australians
In this study, we applied next-generation sequencing and analysis to 245 samples obtained from Aboriginal Australians from South-East Queensland, to predict antigen phenotypes for 36 blood group systems.RESULTS: We report potential weak antigens in blood group systems RH, FY and JR that have potential clinical implications in transfusion and pregnancy settings. These include partial DIII type 4, weak D type 33, and Del RHD (IVS2-2delA). The rare Rh phenotypes D+ C+ E+ c- e+ and D+ C+ E+ c+ e- were also detected.DISCUSSION: The comprehensive analyses of blood group genetic variant profiles identified in this study will prov...

Platelet rich plasma for facial rejuvenation: an overview of systematic reviews
This article aims to review the literature and critically appraise the available evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of PRP for facial rejuvenation.MATERIAL AND METHODS: An overview of systematic reviews (SRs) of PRP use for facial rejuvenation. The methodological quality of the SRs was assessed using the AMSTAR-2 checklist; quality of the evidence from the trials included in each SR was appraised following the GRADE approach.RESULTS: Thirteen SRs published between 2015 and 2023, reporting data from 114 overlapping reports, based on 28 individual primary studies (18 uncontrolled reports), were included in this umbre...

Why might cord blood be a better source of platelets for transfusion to neonates?
Blood Transfus. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.2450/BloodTransfus.566. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThrombocytopenia (defined as a platelet count <150×109/L) is a common condition in preterm neonates and may occur in 18-35% of all infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Neonatal platelet functionality in terms of reactivity is often described as reduced compared to adults, even in healthy, term neonates. However, this platelet "hyporeactivity" does not correspond to a global functional impairment of the normal delicately balanced neonatal hemostatic system. The extent to which neonatal thrombocytopenia and ...
