Can you please read my BMAT Essay?
In conclusion I do not fully agree with this statement as it can be said one who is a doctor preferably would be a well rounded individual and it can be seen as in the medical world one needs both academic ability as well as patient experience. Post to the BMAT thread, that's where all the BMAT test takers are hanging out: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho....php?t=6864748 (Source: The Student Room)

Leave of Absence- Emergency Surgery, Sepsis, and Shock
Just three short months ago, I had a colorectal surgeon incorrectly perform a surgery that caused me to lose half my blood volume, sending me into hypovolemic shock and sepsis. I received 4 units of blood transfusions and had a minor heart attack due to my HR being 180 BPM. I was sick, anemic, and had to have caregivers take care of me for two months and my hemoglobin just stabilized. Now that this happened, my school education is extended a year and I have to repeat withdrawn coursework... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Rhesus Disease
Good morning / day / evening, I realise this is a very specific question, and thus I'm not surprised to have not read about it in my Ob & Gyn book. If a woman were to receive a blood transfusion which contained Rh +ve blood, but she is Rh -ve, would she require earlier shots of Anti-D if she becomes pregnant in the future? Thank you! Why would hospitalist think this is a good idea.. sickle cell pt
20 something year old HbSS, being hospitalized with acute sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis, Hgb sitting around 7. No exchange transfusion or blood transfusion. On hydroxyurea. Poor pain control for several days. Still 10/10 pain, hypertensive, tachycardic, on NC. Recent URI, has bacteremia being treated on IV antibiotics. Their plan was for several weeks of IV abx. But hospitalist also want to do a TEE to rule out endocarditis. - antibiotic plan would not change regardless of outcome of... Blood Transfusion during Spine Surgery
One of our Spine surgeons has requested that I keep the hematocrit above 35% throughout the case. His reasoning is that Optic Ischemic Retinopathy can occur. This surgeons is slow in operating most of the time. He does not make incision in a timely manner. For instance, after induction it sometimes take him two hours to make incision. He takes almost six hours for one level spinal fusion. I am curious if at other hospitals if the blood transfusion committee would not stand for this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Emergent blood transfusion
Assume you have a G5P4 with a previously undiagnosed placenta percreta. She has not had routine prenatal care. She presents urgently to L&D in labor and the OB/GYN calls for a stat C-section. You send a type/screen/cross and proceed to the OR. Intraoperatively, she begins to bleed and sag. You call for blood and the blood bank tells you the patient is A+ but they have detected antibodies on screen. The donor samples they have crossed so far have all been positive and the risk of an... attenuated vaccine repetition
I've read that after a live/attenuated vaccine, when patient receives a blood transfusion or just immunoglobulins for some reason, vaccine must be repeated after few months, why is that? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ethical Question on Parental Consent
Hello, I was thinking about 2 different situations revolving around parental consent and how physicians are expected to respond. Assume child is under 10 and does not have decision making capacity. 1) Child diagnosed with acute lymphoma. Determined that if child does not get blood transfusion, child will die. Parents are Jehovah witnesses and refuse treatment --> Normally, physician is expected to respect their religious beliefs bc forcing transfusion constitutes assault. 2) Child... What do you do if a patient refuses life saving care?
What if someone is in a terrible accident and they refuse life saving care? And what if the patient is unconscious but is a Jehovah's Witness according to their wallet or something? Do you assume they would not want a blood transfusion if they were awake enough to consent? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Discharge home after ED Blood Transfusion
This has recently come up in my group--who can you safely send home after transfusing in the ED? Anybody willing to share what you do in your shop or have a magical set of guidelines they'd be willing to share? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Scenario type of interview question- looking to discuss
In preparing for interviews, I feel less confident about the scenario type of questions. Any advice on how to approach something like the sample question below? I have ideas on how to answer, I guess I just get nervous that I might say something totally wrong (in terms of professional medical decision making). A patient who has been in an accident needs a blood transfusion. She states that her religion does not allow them. You are the physician in charge. What will you do? Will you override... Ethical situation with Jehovah's witnesses
UW question 783 got me thinking about other situations where I'm not sure about what to do. So, we have a mother and child in a car accident and they are both incapacitated and require life sustaining blood transfusions. The husband says that they are Jehovah's witnesses and then hangs up, not giving any further information. Neither of these patients have JW cards, so, in this emergency situation, we would transfuse them both. BUT... What if the husband got to the ED in time, and as the...
