Naturally Occurring Anti-D in a Male Blood Donor, Unresolved Mystery
AbstractIn accordance with numerous national and international criteria, screening donated blood for abnormal antibodies against red cell antigens is crucial for patient safety. Antibodies can be formed by three mechanisms: by immune responses, naturally occurring, or passively acquired. In accordance with departmental policy, ICT was performed on a 30-yearold male blood donor's sample in addition to ABO Rh grouping. He tested A Rh Dnegative and had a positive ICT (+  2). Anti-D was identified by using the antibody screening and identification panel. Retesting revealed similar results, so we called the donor. We were una...

Safety and complications of continuation of aspirin therapy in patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic simple prostatectomy
AbstractTo evaluate the safety and feasibility of continued perioperative aspirin at the time of robotic assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP). We performed a retrospective review of our IRB approved institutional database of patients who underwent RASP between 2013 and 2022. Comparative groups included patients taking aspirin in the perioperative period and those not taking aspirin pre-operatively. The primary outcome was any post-operative bleeding related complication using the modified Clavien –Dindo classification. Secondary outcomes included the identification of risk factors for increased blood loss in the entire s...

Risk factors for severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a Chinese cohort of very preterm infants
CONCLUSION: Our study not only reaffirmed the established risk factors of low GA and BW for sBPD in VPIs, but also identified additional, potentially modifiable risk factors. Further research is warranted to explore whether intervention in these modifiable factors might reduce the risk of sBPD.Clinical Trial Reg. Comparison and Utility of Intravenous Iodinated Contrast in Chest, Abdomen, Pelvis Computerized Tomography for Trauma Patients With Blunt Mechanism of Injury Before and After the May 9, 2022 Global Contrast Shortage at a Level II Trauma Center
Discussion: There was a decrease in the percentage of CT contrast studies performed during the shortage. A higher percentage of injuries were identified in the patients scanned with contrast. However, there were no significant differences in patient outcomes. Certain trauma patients may be safely scanned without contrast.PMID:38655835 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248806 (Source: The American Surgeon)

A Comparative Analysis of Freelite and N Latex FLC Assay for the sFLC Measurements in Suspected Patients of Monoclonal Gammopathy
AbstractWith the introduction of newer platforms for sFLC estimation, more comparative attempts are required to establish an assay-specific reference range, that can be used in the day-to-day clinical management of the patients, as the revised criteria for the diagnosis of myeloma recommend the use of involved Free light chain (FLC)/uninvolved FLC ratio as myeloma defining event, solely relying on Freelite assay. This was an observational study that included 101 patients, 55 (54.5%) with M-protein (myeloma), and 46 (45.5%) without M-protein. The estimation of the sFLC assay was carried out at two separate platforms, the Fr...

Open versus robot-assisted retroperitoneal tumors resection involving inferior vena cava, abdominal aorta, and renal hilum: a comparative study
ConclusionWhen comparing RMBRs to OMBRs, it was observed that RMBR was associated with lower (EBL), shorter postoperative hospital stays (PHS), and reduced operative time (OT) in a specific group of patients with both benign and malignant tumors. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Super-mini PCNL (SMP) with suction versus standard PCNL for the management of renal calculi of 1.5  cm–3 cm: a randomized controlled study from a university teaching hospital
ConclusionSuper-mini PCNL is equally effective as standard PCNL in treating renal calculi up to 3  cm, with significantly reduced postoperative pain and duration of hospital stay and lower risk of Clavien grade ≥ 3 complications, although with higher operative times. Absence of evidence of transfusion transmission risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United States: Results froma 28-year lookback study
We report on a 28-year lookback study of recipients of blood from donors who subsequently developed CJD.METHODS: Patients with diagnosed CJD and a history of blood donation were identified. Blood centers were asked to provide information about the distribution of the donations and consignees were requested to provide information about the recipients of the donations. Vital status of each available recipient was determined and, if deceased, the reported cause(s) of death were obtained primarily from the National Death Index. All recipients included in the study database contributed person-time up to the last recorded review...

Unraveling DEHP influence on hemoglobin S polymerization in sickle cell disease: Ex vivo, in vitro and in silico analysis
This study aimed to unravel DEHP effect on SCD patient's hemoglobin function. We found that HbS polymerization using whole erythrocytes is decreased by DEHP in ex vivo experiments and this effect might be mediated by the DEHP-VAL6 interaction, evaluated in silico. Isolated HbS exhibited less polymerization at low DEHP concentrations and increased polymerization rate at higher concentration. When analyzing the propensity to aggregate, HbS is more inclined to aggregate when compared to HbA due to the residue 6 mutation. Circular dichroism showed characteristic hemoglobin peaks for oxygenated HbS that are lost when oxygen is ...
